Why didn’t the court take statements from the doctors that Mark would not likely have lived after the grievous harm done to his body? He would probably have had continual infections in his deep wounds that would have killed him. I would think that would have taken some of the onus off of his euthanasia, though, that, of course, was the ultimate cause of his death before the infections could have killed him.
This also demonstrates why I’m a firm believer in euthanasia, or death with dignity laws in some countries. Even if I were a parent, I would not want to watch my child of any age suffer in this manner, especially if there were no hope of recovery, but only pain and suffering going forward to a certain death anyway, and I would have agreed to it. People often say that it is “playing God”, which I don’t believe. It is an act of compassion, just as we have our beloved pets put down when they are suffering, and can’t be made well again. I really don’t see a difference. We do it because we love them and can’t bear to see them suffering, and, for me, it would be the same with a person I loved. I would certainly choose it for myself if I were in that kind of situation.
This is also a good lesson that if you’re in a relationship with someone who is abusive, especially physically abusive, DO NOT go back “one more time” just to clear the air or tie up loose ends, or explain yourself. Just get out, and don’t let them know where you are. You never know when they will go over that edge to uncontrollable rage where they will end your life. Too many people want to end a relationship amicably, but they often do so to their demise. It’s tragic and unnecessary. No one is worth that.
