  1. Very good discussion. I would add a couple of other factors: 1. The lowering of the educational standards in the U.S. for at least the last 40 years. “The powers that be” (at least the conservatives) understand all to well that the less educated people are, the easier it is to manipulate them, and it has worked only too well for them. 2. Also, I would say that Americans have developed a far too great adoration of “celebrity”, and they have a bad habit of thinking that if someone has celebrity status because of acting skills, or even just obtaining wealth, they would make a great political leader. That really started with Ronald Reagan (and he wasn’t even a really great actor), who did so much damage to this country (by being coached by the Heritage Foundation, yes, the same ones who wrote Project 2025). Then came Arnold Schwarzenegger as Governor of California. He wasn’t a great actor, either, but plenty of fun, and seems like a nice enough guy personally, but he pretty nearly wrecked California’s economy. I think Meryl Streep is a fantastic actress, but I can’t even imagine picking her for President. Celebrity does NOT make someone a great, or even good, politician or leader. 3. Even though you did mention sports teams, I think that needs expansion. We have definitely turned politics into a team sport, and people get far too involved emotionally in sports already. They’re games! And politics should NOT be a game, as it has very serious and long-lasting consequences for everyone in the country.
