  1.  @josephinebennington7247  Newton envisaged it as a direct force between masses though he asked the same questions you did. According to Einstein, since there is no absolute frame of reference everything is in motion and inertia means everything keeps moving in a straight line unless something acts upon it, space-time curvature is what change an objects course. That curvature is caused by a gravitational field around mass (don't ask me how - way beyond my knowledge of physics).
