  1. Sherlock Holmes originally and dealt with solving a case (a single past event) rather than identifying a mechanism that can predict future events. Conan Doyle overlooked the unknown; you can’t be certain that you know everything. In science, once you have eliminated the impossible, you are still left with unknowns and a model that can never be proven absolutely.
