@crazymavbro6418 And not just ROE, but basic target selection. When you are only allowed to attack things the enemy has in large numbers instead of things that are in short supply you are squandering the basic attributes of air power.

I wouldn't accord too much meaning to nicknames applied to aircraft. Pilots are simple creatures who think in terms relative to what they know. Perhaps the F-100 was a lead sled compared to the F-86, but it wasn't a lead sled compared to its contemporaries, and I doubt there was a pilot who would rather take the F-86 into combat instead of the F-100. It also had lower wing loading than the F-5 that fans think of as a highly maneuverable fighter.

Delivery of air to ground weapons by fighters was not a new idea born of nuclear weapons, and in WWII was an integral part of offensive counter air operations. You can destroy and damage enemy fighters more efficiently by attacking them while parked rather than by engaging them in dogfights. As nukes proliferated fighters were adapted to carry them as a natural progression of fighter weapons capability.
