Fighters like the F-4 had undersides painted in a light gray to blend with the sky, not in anti-flash white to reflect thermal energy like the B-52. The gray paint scheme of modern jets is camouflage, just a more universal color scheme. A lot of USAF aircraft in the late 50s and early 60s which appear to be unpainted were actually painted in aluminized silver or a light gray, primarily for the purpose of corrosion control. Aircraft suffered from sitting out on the ramp in all weather conditions. The paint not only sealed the surface, but sealed minor gaps that could allow rainwater to penetrate to interior components.
