The idea behind the sonic cruiser was to fly direct between cities and eliminate your connecting flight. That is where most of the benefit to the passenger comes from. The speed of the airplane is not really about making the passenger's air time shorter, but is about the economics of allowing the aircraft to fly more miles per day in compensation for carrying fewer passengers on each flight than a larger jet could. The idea was to operate outside the typical hub and spoke system that flies a passenger more miles than a direct route would, but at lower cost per mile as well as more inconvenience to the passenger.
