  1.  @CCFONESOL depends on what you regard as “working.” If you mean, “one could buy a house on 1 job, and otherwise do all right” - the odds were “decent” if you looked white, were able-bodied, used good judgement, worked hard, etc… Of course, if you deviated much from that formula - the odds got worse. If you were disabled - no way in <censored> could you manage… (Can speak of this from personal experience…) Regardless, those ODDS are vastly better than today.
