  1.  @markwilliams2620  that is partly true for type II diabetes. Type 1, or juvenile onset, is almost entirely beyond the individual’s control. The version I have, which is (most likely) due to autoimmune chronic pancreatitis, began manifesting in grade school. Going full pro-anorexic at a young age - which was the treatment for insulin-dependent diabetes during the decade prior to the advent of insulin in 1922 - would have only postponed the inevitable in my case. It gave a handful of months for type-one diabetics then, all of that time racked with the pangs of hunger. This does not mean that careful diet doesn’t help - it does - but it is far from the only story, even in type two diabetes.
