Good. Passenger service almost needs dedicated routes. I’m wondering if it can also transport mail, parcels, etc…. As in these are added to the end of the train?

@enkephalin07 depends on what is meant by “high speed.” I’d think it “awesome” to get on the Coast Starlight at the time I recall, in Portland, for example - about 2:20 pm or so - and get off in LA at, say, 5 pm (instead of 9:30 pm, for instance.) Now if I were traveling for business, though - it would be better if it got in LA a few hours sooner. Still, though - the train is the most chill way to go if you’re not up to driving…

@whoisthatkidd2212 which is actually a fairly good idea, as 1) fuel shortages are looming, and 2) climate change is here NOW. Rail transport, then, is about the best option we have under such constraints! Corporatists and Corporations almost seem to be deep into Nihilism any more…

Yeah, waking up just prior to the train pulling into Dunsmuir in Northern California was surreal. Then, southbound crossing this one really big Bridge somewhere around the Bay Area… I much prefer the train.

@graham1034 and being sardine-packed into a high-velocity flying beverage can is a nightmare for those who deal with sensory overload and related disabilities. The train is LOTS more chill, especially if you can afford a Roomette!

@piemadd perhaps if they had a special design of rail car, one which permitted quick loading and unloading of “mail bins” - sort of like some Japanese trucks I’ve seen pictures of? Like a forklift comes up, and inserts its tines into the slots underneath the bin, which unlatches it automatically, permitting an easy withdrawal? Granted, this would not be a lot of mail, etc, per train, but if more trains started running (in lieu of, say, aircraft, busses, etc.) then it might be possible to hitch an added car or two onto the usual passenger train if said “mail car” were set up properly. I do recall the train needing to stop for “longer” periods every so often when I rode it in May of 2021.
