@eddyb1596 My suspicion is that people who say that sort of thing were inclined toward Authoritarianism from the start - even if Bernie isn’t an Authoritarian, as far as I can tell.

@jbibro true. Giving anything to charity is not what an Ayn Rand devotee would do - and this fellow sounds like he either currently lives, or wants to live, in Galt’s Gulch. (“Atlas Shrugged” reference. Never read that one, but I have read “the Fountainhead.”)

@damianrobbins4167 and, of course, there’s the “libertarian to fascist pipeline,” which largely works to the social Darwinism common to both schools of thought. And, if one is inclined that way - then one either is, or inclined to be, a Drumpfist. Not all Drumpfists are rubes. The truly dangerous ones often are educated, e.g. Deth’Santis currently - or Doktor Josef Goebbels. (yes, he had a Ph.D, in philology, from Heidelberg. Lots of Nazis were educated.)

Of course, that statement of Johnson’s needs to be restricted to able-bodied, non-disfigured white men - because back when he said that, the ugly laws were still very much in force - and that meant that those proscribed under such rulings were likely to think being under Jim Crow instead would be a great improvement! Jim Crow allowed you a place in society - a bad place, a narrow place, an unpleasant place, and an uncertain place - but still a place. In contrast, the Ugly Laws said you were not to be seen in public. There was no place allowed, outside of - perhaps - a freak show. I was subject to these laws myself as a child, or rather, the mindset behind them, as I was fortunate enough to grow up in an area which did not have them in force - unlike where I live now, which enforced them with vigor. Only being in Nazi Germany’s death camps would be clearly worse than being under the ugly laws.

@terrysweitzer6772 true, no real “conservative” would. I have my doubts as to whether such currently exist in this country, if you speak of any real numbers. Trouble is, Drumpfco/M.A.G.A. has far more in common with the N.S.D.A.P. (Nazis) than, say, someone like Goldwater.

@Zzz-ff1np the other, darker interpretation, is “do you wish to BE Drumpf? Do you see him as your perfected self? Do you believe that by aligning with such a Reprehensible, that you will become Reprehensible as well?” That speaks of the true “Drumpfian Religion,” a form of shamanic paganism that resembles a south-seas cargo cult in terms of what it actually believes. Everything operates by a kind of “Magic” in that kind of a Cult: it does for Drumpfists just like it did for Nazis.
