  1. Ride for an hour in near freezing rainy weather, progressing to actual snow for the last few miles. Coming to a stop, utterly numb - you fall off the bike, then stumble to their house and stumble-crawl to where you can get into the shower. The warm water feels intensely painful. It’s like being set on fire, and it takes twenty minutes in that fiery shower for your mind to resume working properly. Your body takes longer to get where you have normal sensation and you aren’t stumbling and falling down like you’ve drank a quart of whiskey. Your wet clothing goes in the drier, so it can dry out and you can wear it. Warm clothing helps a lot. Now you’ve got to drive a truck forty plus miles to work at swing shift. You’ll leave the bike in their barn until you can collect it on the weekend. This was during the winter of 1988, I think.

  2. A light oil, most likely. One might dilute more-common lubricants with kerosene or gasoline, or use a dry-film lube like powdered graphite.
