Brian - If by "murdered Bernie", you mean Cruz gibbered a bunch of nonsense, you're correct. Fact-checking showed Ted Cruz lied A LOT. Bernie was on point with most of his facts and Cruz never answered how should we take care of the uninsured. His only answer was basically to hope some insurance company sells a cheap insurance plan that doesn't actually do anything. Bernie could point to dozens of real world systems like his own preferred single-payer system. Not a single industrialized country in the world operates like Cruz's. it's all "free market" utopian theories on paper that have never panned out in real life.

Wayne Harmon - The VA sucks because it's underfunded. If you don't fund something properly it will suck whether it's public or private. We can look at countries with single-payer and they all kick our ass. Our private system is okay bit it's expensive as hell and a good number of Americans can't afford it. Hence why the private sector is inferior overall at that particular venture because private companies have no inventive to give coverage to poor people, particularly poor sick people. Republicans are opposed to the government even imposing cost controls on private insurers. Not that cost controls would do too much good because our system would still cause people to go into debt if they get sick. 40% of bankruptcies in America are due to getting sick.

Single-payer would render Medicare and Medicaid unnecessary, which would allow us to scrap them and save over $500 billion/year. If we increase taxes on the top 5% of earners by a mere 5%, it would increase revenue by over $300 billion. Those 2 actions alone would cover the cost for single-payer. All single-payer systems cost less than our current system. We currently spend around $800 billion on healthcare per year, a single-payer system would be $350-500 billion.

Franklin Hicks - False. Single-payer is like paying for the Military: insurance is no longer a market. It's no longer supply-and-demand. If demand increases supply can be increased like we increase military spending during times of war. If you want to treat health as a commodity, it's a commodity with very inelastic demand. The demand will remain the same no matter the supply. Now, please point to some real world models of "free market" healthcare systems that are more cheap and efficient than single-payer systems. No matter how high demand came, tens of millions remained uninsured because there's no profit to be made in treating sick people. Hence why a "free market" does not work well with Human health. Insurance premiums used to increase at nearly 50% every year before ACA was implemented in 2010. I remember because I had to pay them. You sound like you don't know much about this topic. You were under the impression that rates were flat before the ACA? Jesus Christ. Study this subject some first.

Denver Joel - WTH are you talking about? Private colleges cost more than public colleges. Private colleges are about making money, they can charge whatever they want. Public colleges have lower price limits since they're less profit-oriented. The government knows it can't charge endless amounts of money because their only revenue is taxes and tax revenue is not endless.

Prior to Medicare, Medicaid and HIPAA most Americans had no health insurance because it was too expensive for most Americans to afford. In 1910, less than 50% of Americans had health insurance. You have ZERO idea of what you're talking about..It's really obvious you don't know much at all about this subject. You just seem to be reporting some "free market" ideological points without understanding any history or how these "free market" concepts don't apply well to the situation.

If a patient has no problems on a checkup they don't demand more. When people are fine, they usually don't go to the hospital. We have real world models to look at: do you see healthy people in Canada or the UK going to the hospital demanding more health? Whatever the fuck that would look like? You keep talking as if single-payer systems don't exist that we can look at and see how free market predictions about them don't come to fruition.

Because the government is good at health insurance doesn't mean I think the government should do all things. You're being ridiculous. It's not either or. The government is good for some things, the market is good for others. The market is terrible for cleaning up waste, protecting the environment, sheltering the homeless, investing in risky technology with no immediate profit, etc. The government is terrible at food production and allocation, light manufacturing and consumer technology.

If you know about Economics, you'd know that Health has nearly perfectly inelastic demand. A cancer patient needs medicine no matter what, thus is not subject to normal supply-and-demand forces. Treating poor, sick people is very costly and a Capitalist's motive is to maximize profit. There's no real profit to be made in treating a poor person who needs a tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in treatment every year yet only earns $30,000/year. In a free market system, you'd leave people like that uninsured, which is tens of millions of Americans. In a "free market capitalist" healthcare system, the goal of an insurer is to provide no service if possible (service is a cost, minimize costs) while charging maximum premium prices (maximizing revenue) and ignoring externalities. Applying a "free market" to healthcare is like trying to apply the "free market" to waste cleanup or environmental protection or feeding the homeless. No profit in it.
