  1. Yeah, there's crime in Jamaica but there is high crime in just about all industrializing countries. Doesn't make them bad places. Jamaica has a good economy and its crime rate has gone down quite a lot in the past 20 years. "Atlanta as a civilized area?" It has one of the best economies of any major city in the US and one of the largest middle-class populations of any major city in the US. I agree the crime is a big problem, but crime and development are different issues (though they overlap).

I know, but there are plenty of largely-black areas that are successful (like Prince George's County, MD and Atlanta) and plenty of white areas that are shitty (like the former Soviet Block and the American Rustbelt/Bible Belt). Nothing to do with race, everything to do with economics. Also, Jamaica is nowhere near the most technologically advanced nation but it's really not a bad country overall. It and Barbados have fairly good ratings on the International HDI list.
