  6. Hi Carol, My two cents or dime's worth with inflation. While watching your interviews and other Nomad You Tubers, such as Bob wells and others, I frequently hear the comment that people are forced into vanlife, etc. because of economic circumstances, that is not me. I am an aspiring nomad currently working on a long-term work Camping assignment. What appeals to me is being CHEAP. I hate to spend money unnecessarily. I will spend money on my family, per se, but I hate to spend money on myself. I never want to be in the situation where I am manipulated by some corporation to fork over wads of cash for their mostly useless products. I am in my early 60's and I look forward this current and next chapters in my life of one which is financially stabile. Stabile because I have reduced my monthly expenses to about 30% when I worked to pay rent. AS Bob Wells has said many times, "when you don't have a rent or mortgage to pay you don't need to make as much money." I only want to work seasonally or part time for the rest of my life. As I said, I am working a long term temp job with good pay and there are many people like me who are enjoying the freedom of not paying ret/mortgage , therefore, we are not all desperate. I don't mean to sound offensive to those who have little hope, but we are not all the same. That being said if you have a vehicle and some money (perhaps Social Security and part time or seasonal job) you can have hope. Learn to be frugal, be very disciplined on your spending (Gas, food, phone, insurance, emergency fund, etc) and enjoy nature and the experiences which you will come to know. Sorry about the long comment. Keep on keeping on as the kids used to say. LOl.

  14. People will not like my comment, but she NEEDS to be paid at least MINIMUM WAGE. I am sure many employers would love to have people work for them and NOT PAY them. Would you pay an employer for the privilege of parking in their lot and working for free? Carol, you mentioned Tiffany has a husband so hopefully he has an income generating job. Unless, one has a substantial pension and perhaps Social Security benefits I cannot see a volunteer camp host position would be viable. You still need money and volunteering while your savings gets depleted is not very wise in my opinion.

  30. Terry and I are the same age. Regarding his working life, not to be harsh but if you work with your body age catches up to you. If your work abuses your back, knees, or feet, unless you have a sedentary job such as office work or computer-based work in an office or remotely as we get older, we cannot keep up. The larger point regarding Terry, who seems like a genuinely nice man who deserves better, the landlord greed is growing beyond sustainability. What are people to do: spend all their savings in 2-3 years be left to live the street until one passes?

I had seen Randy do a video of this model and I was apprehensive as it looked all the space was too condensed with the kitchen section, but she has made it appear spacious. I wonder how much Marina was able to get her 12x20. I believe Randy was initially offering that home, deck, fence, a place in the Grove for $75K. May Marina enjoy good health in the future.

Mark said he could camp on his land for up to six months with a variance ($100 cost I believe) in a off-grid situation. My issue would be if I, or as Mark stated he wanted to live 6 months on his land and head south for 6 months. What happens when you are away if squatters or other interlopers settle on your land?

  42. I like what Pastor Slade and his church is doing. Many churches are seeking to help out low-income seniors. I myself, have my name on a waiting list for senior apt in Florida owned by the Presbyterian church. I am aware of a few similar apts ( small studio, large studio and 1 bedroom) owned by the Lutheran and Presbyterian churches in Florida where the apt rent is from $475-$575 per month. The catch- waiting list. It could be 2-3 years to go to the top. And then you have to pass their interview. Nothing is guaranteed. Some hope perhaps.

  43. Thanks for posting, Carol. Did you mention in the earlier portion of your interview that Schoolie Carol was going to have some insights regarding nomad/work camping jobs? Regarding nomad budgets I believe there is basic budget of Gas, food, phone/internet, health insurance, vehicle insurance, vehicle maintenance (emergency fund), etc. then everyone should tweak their budget to fit one's personal needs and wants. It is not a one-size fits all. Regarding medical expenses, if one is younger( i.e. not yet on Medicare) they can get state insurance and the less you earn, the less your premium will be. Also, regarding Social Security benefits, I believe there are some who are getting 1500 to 2500 per month because they benefitted through having earned high wages during their lifetime. Most nomad videos I have seen have people receiving $700-$1,000 per month. I wonder what the percentage is for people who are initially receiving $1,000 or less per month. I have been keeping my budget for over a year. I total up everything except rent. I am work camping and my employer pays for my hotel room. My expenses have been between $600-$700 per month, therefore I know for myself I can live on less than $1,000 per month. When I file for Social Security next spring, I intend to work part time thus, in fact, doubling my income. I realize not everyone can work as they get older, but channels like yours have shown us there is a way. Thanks again. up every

  45. looks like a teardrop, not a Tiny House. A lot of cars CANNOT tow that rig (1,850 pounds). Most compact SUVs (CRV class are about 1500) and smaller cars are @1,100. The Tiny House headline piqued my interest as I am seriously considering a Tiny House, one where I can park it legally without being given the bum;s rush by local law enforcement.

For example, I am 64 and fell on ice 9 months ago. My prize was a major rotator cuff tear and now a frozen shoulder. I won't bother with the misery I have suffering. Now a big fan of one floor does it all.

  49. I have been watching Randy and Amanda for about a year. Randy mentioned he would be putting a privacy guard/fence between those tiny's. I thought he did a nice job. I believe the Tiny Owner's, such as the community you videoed were able to get their space for about $6,000 for infrastructure costs. The newer spaces in the Mountain or Buffalo Creek seem to be $20,000 and up. Those of us who lived in apartments or travelled and did not have a home to sell and use that sale's capital gains would have buy with their savings since most banks, regardless of one's bank deposits won't lend for Tiny House mortgage. I don't like, my preference, the wash-out potential of the Mountain/BC lots. I realize the older lots are sold out, but I would wait and save my money and hope an older lot opens up. I am already thinking about my end game (when I will not be able to travel fulltime) and I have yet to decide if my future will be a mobile home in Florida or a some small acreage in Arizona. I think it is important to have options.

  56. Hi Carol, I am a big advocate for car/SUV campers to include a tent. With the tent you can sleep in your vehicle for safety and set up a kitchen and lounge area in the tent. Regarding low-income seniors being forced out that is becoming common place. I still have my name in a low-income apartment rental in the Southeast which has gone from $550/mth to $725 a month. I am told it will be another 2 years before an opening happens. Factor in electrical bills, Medicare, food and the basic cost will be well over $1,000. Costs keep rising. Best of luck to Daryl and may she continue to thrive with good health and freedom.

  64. I did Uber in Las Vegas from late 2016 to mid 2019. Uber said they take a 25% cut for bookings, after almost a year the 25% cut was %41! I keep a log of all my rides-it was my income. I did 11,000 rides. Driving Uber in Las Vegas you have have high gasoline costs, tens of thousands fellow drivers to compete for rides, wear and tear on vehicles (50,000+ hard city driving), business taxes,etc. It is not all Rainbows and lolypops.

  69. I am on 3 senior housing waiting lists. I am told it will be almost 5 years or more before they anticipate an opening. And, with the rising housing costs as they are, then will I be able to afford a unit at that time. My job will probably end by Thanksgiving, but then I will have to find another job. I have seen similar jobs in various parts of the country and all their least costly housing is at a minimum $1,600 per month. The very expensive housing will surely lead more and more people to a forced nomadic lifestyle.

With Mobile Home Parks, the biggest negative are that corporations are buying up parks and gouging the residents.i believe Florida has a law that the lot rents can only increase a small percentage each year- 4% perhaps. But the loophole is that when a corporation buys a park they can set the initial rate very high. On theory one could pay $400 for lot and a corporation can set a new price at $1,000 or more.

  94.  @gloriouslifeonwheels3621  I re-watched Don of Affordable Desert Living(ADL) when his Shed house was delivered. He bought his 4 acres in Cochise County, AZ near Sierra Vista for $12,000. Prices have gone up. Cochise is not as hot as Phoenix or Quartzsite (typically 90-95 vs. 120 in the summer). Don did a 10x20 shed for about $7500 (Emerson Sheds). Cochise (disclaimer: I dont work for their Chamber of Commerce) has a few small cities ( Sierra Vista, Bisbee-great little Artist community with 18 galleries, Douglas, Tombstone, Huachuca City, etc. where you can visit for culture and supplies while still living off-grid. Up in Apache- I have watched Simply Lesa in Apache County (Witch Wells) where she has a nice 12x12 with a 12 foot ceiling on 10 acres. But Apache is very, very remote. Nearest towns 30+ miles away look like whisltestops. Good luck with the basics there. A final note on the desirable OPT-OUT permit: Don (ADL) got his in 2019 for $392. He had to have a septic installed and inspected. Don said the state of Arizona considers kitchen sink water as Black Water and must go to a septic tank! He also said, he has a 10x20 shed ) and anything over 200 square feet requires more permits/inspections( Electrical, Plumbing, Fire marshal, general building occupancy, etc. The real issue is not an extra couple of hundred dollars for permits but hiring county approved contracts to do that work which could be in the thousands!! Don only did the floor model without a loft. If I did the 10x12 I would do the barn design with a loft. That would clear up ground floor space and have a tiny house-style loft bedroom.

I grew up in the U.S. middle class; I have been in various stages of the financial existences from Middle Class, Working class, Poor. I am no longer poor. I do not regret any time. My parents when they retired bought a mobile home in Florida. My Dad called it their tin house. It seems you basically have a tin house just smaller than my parents. If you have the basics, food (something to cook your food on), water, a bed, a toilet, somewhere to bathe, you have what you need. Please keep enjoying your life.

  109. Sonny Girl I agree with you. AS a libertarian I dont want someone's politicals thrown down my throat at every turn. Although politically I am usually, but not always a tad bit to the rigt, I appreciate most all viewpoints. People might think I am an enigma as one of my favorite programs over the last 20 yers was Peak Moment TV (2004-2018, I think when it was active) on You Tube. PMTV stressed the dissipation of cheap oil and how the world economy was doomed to collapse. Most geologists I have read or seen interviewed predict Oil would last anywhere from 80 to 150 years. The oil collapse , though higher prices may result, I dont necessarily believe is running out in the next 10-20 years as PMTV believes. I do like their programming on Frugality and Self Sufficienctcy ( such as permaculture, car-sharing, non electrical use inventions) as I am basically cheap and do not wish to be a pawn for corporations to buy every piece of junk they peddle. So even a conservative leaning Libertarian can enjoy a liberal show.

  111.  @tammieparrishmiller3669  Thanks for asking. I am in NW Minnesota. Very small town. About 50 miles east of N. Dakota. Weather-wise-vey gusty, farm area. I grew up in Massachusetts, but I have lived in Florida and Las Vegas for 20+ years of my life. My nomad dilemma is do I want to tow a trailer/camper or to I want to be more stealthy and have it all in a van. For me , I look at campers in two styles. I have seen Hiker Trailers which have the rear galley so that you have a bedroom, a rear kitchen and your tow vehicle for storage. I also liked the runaway campers, which are very lightweight , but no rear galley. There is a nice video by Slim Potatohead featuring Dani a woman who was living out of a Runaway with her two dogs in the Arizona desert. And, then there are the vans. I really liked Marie's set up. Very clever, but you have to be extremely minimalist.

For people who have to commute to a job where they might drive 500-,1000 miles a week, then a vehicles MPG is crucial. But if a nomad is stationary or spending a week or two on BLM land then the MPG is not as crucial. Basically, it is how much will you spend each month on gas. With that said, Schoolie Carol must have a big fuel bill to pay as Buses are notorious for getting very low mpg. Myself, I am lucky that I am work camping and my employer is 1/2 mile away. My take, though, is what is the end plan for nomads in the 60-80 year old range. Do they even have a backup plan when they can no longer drive? In 12, 15, 20 years will they, assuming they are still around, be able to drive any vehicle. Younger nomads will more likely than older nomads have to deal with electric or hybrid vehicles should they wish to continue their nomad existence.

  175. Carol, when you say there isxa $2,000 savings limit are you referencing SSDI only? I have my name on a few senior apts and they are HUD subsidized . I have been told the rent is 30% of your income. No savings limit. Upon further queries I have learned that there is a .06% adjustment towards income against savings accounts. If you have $100,000 in savings that equates to an extra $60 (100,00 x .0006.) The $60 would be added to your 30%. Also, there is the accrued interest on CD's to be aded onto your rent. I realize many seniors do not have much, if any in savings. I only mention those totals for renting with HUD properties. I am 65 and currently pay $414 for Medicare, supplemental, dental and pharmacy. My sweatheart deal if living rent free( my employer pays) ends at year end so I think I will be in for a huge rental shock. Please keep up the good work informing us.
