you're bad with history. The USSR gave Ukraine and the Ukrainian language a separate status, no one ever tried to destroy it, quite the contrary, the preservation of the Ukrainian language as separate from Russian was part of the Soviet "struggle against imperial chauvinism."
After the collapse of the USSR, Russia had no influence on Ukraine, but even then the Ukrainian language in Ukraine was very heterogeneous, and differed depending on the distance from the Russian border. In the east, in the border areas, they spoke almost pure Russian, and in the west, on the border with Poland, they spoke a mixture of Ukrainian and Polish.
