That, but also industrial hygiene in Taiwan is mostly (with some exceptions for international investors projects from Europe/USA) extremely poor, so such jobs are not only dirty and hot, but could cause long term health issues from carcinogens, teratogens, etc; exposing the worker and the worker's off-spring. Using third world labour instead of addressing the safety/health is the preferred solution.

I've not checked for Taiwan, but all the established political parties in Hong Kong under the Brits, and nearly all under China, are not only property owners, they are landlords living off rents. The entire Democratic Party under Martin Lee was solicitors who made all their money from conveyancing property in addition to their own rental properties. It' nearly the same in Singapore, so I'd guess Taiwan isn't far off, so they only promote family growth when they can't find another way to inflate property prices. In HK and Singapore this is mostly by selling to extra-nationals (and mainland Chinese for HK) to keep putting money into elite pockets.

  3. Yes, there are a whole host of issues which were skipped here. Primarily arm management was lazy and did not do due diligence and setting up the corporation. If this was a publicly-listed company set up in HK or China they could never have done this stupidity that they did.

Modern corporate chops are steel, made in government factory, and have chipset with nearfield antenna imbedded to prevent duplication fraud. Chops (the mark) can now be sent over internet using special readers dongles. There are a lot of other holes in the story too, for example the legal representative had power to immediately issue a new seal and cancel the old one, but the morons at arm allow the corporation to be set up one man. A man who made himself CEO and then his friend as legal rep. It's malfeasance at ARM HQ, and possible corruption in UK based staff, not for first time.

State Capitalist have bosses who need to show the party they are competent, and since their real value outputs are nebulous, over working the staff is an easy and direct measure. Workers in industries like the power grid, mass transit, etc, where outputs are clear and planning is (relatively) simple work very normal hours.

The idiots at arm trusted this man and of course he set up the corporation to protect his own interest, there are number protections within China corporate law and they failed to do anything to make use of them when setting up the corporation. This is called laziness and mendacity. It's amazing how lazy rich people can be with other people's money. Remember the CEO is not the major shareholder in most corporations. If you look at American Banks it's in his interest to f*** over the shareholders.

  16.  @cubitme  and in theory the board of directors can be fired by the shareholders through a vote, though that never really happens unless it's a large takeover bid. A similar situation in China, stockholders can vote their proxy, but most don't.

I mention in a comment elsewhere in this post that arms problem started by not hiring a competent legal team to set up a corporation and depending too much on the American buddy. The legal representative has the power to resolve all of these things very quickly, and while the article above and in the video doesn't cover it, I suspect our clever American put his friend in the position of the legal representative. This is an absolute No-No which any competent legal team would have done better at covering. Part of the whole point of having the legal representative is to prevent this sort of situation from occurring. Lazy management at corporate headquarters defines the whole issue. Arm should fire their legal team and then they should fire their board
