If you think Haskell is hard, try its tooling.

If only Haskell folks fixed their package manager, we could all try learning the language.

@Tomyb15 Everyone complains about the tooling, so it's not just you. Everyone has a limited lifetime on Earth and we cannot be spending infinite time learning complicated package managers. It's supposed to just be "add this package to my project" and done, but instead the tooling around Haskell demands all of your attention and free time to studying it. Not worth it. Haskell itself is awesome but it needs to be rescued from its awful tooling by the Rust team or the Nix team.

@Instr Is that true? They considered renaming Haskell H?

@spl420 Yes.

Maybe and Either are not "brand new concepts", they have been around in our field of Computer Science for many, many decades. Please inform yourself about your own field instead of saying silly things like "Maybe and Either sound like brand new concepts!"

@jurajchobot But Mandarin has nothing to do with programming, whereas you are supposed to know the mathematical foundations of computer programming if you are a programmer. So your analogy is invalid.

@jurajchobot You are the one missing my point. Mandarin is not required for language speakers in general, but mathematics IS required for programmers in general. That is where your analogy fails.

@user-tx4wj7qk4t "most people seem to think programming is just blue collar work and moving memory around. It's really unsettling that this field is full of so many people like this. Imagine if mechanical engineers didn't know any math or physics and just did whatever they felt like with 0 tests and just followed trends like most of these people" I agree with you 100%. I often say the exact same thing, "imagine if engineers just followed trends instead of math". Can we be friends?

You are all being too nice. The tooling around Haskell kills the language and makes something enjoyable a nightmare. They need help fixing it, I cannot help them, but the Rust people should help them.

@torarinvik4920 The only way I ever managed to develop a real product in Haskell was when I abandoned Cabal/Stack/etc and used only Nix.

@voxelfusion9894 If you want an efficient Haskell, there is Rust.
