I am a software developer. The reason companies release their software research is because there is actually zero value in software. All the value is in servicing software (i.e. selling customer service for users of your free software) and upselling them to advanced/exclusive/business/gourmet features (that last one was a joke). I believe there is an essay online proving by several examples that the value of software truly is zero. This is why "open source" is so big in software and in no other field. It is not because programmers are especially altruist. It's because they are all competing for users, so the quickest way to get them is to make your software cost zero dollars and charge users when they need help or advanced features. This is also the same exact reason many software applications have a free-tier version and then a paid version. It is also the same reason many online platforms doing software-as-a-service provide free-tiers for basic and limited usage and then charge to upgrade you. It is all about ramping the user up to services and features and the competition drives everyone to price their software at zero. As a grander example, this is why Java succeeded and Smalltalk failed. This example should verify my programmer card.

So now we can control lizards and rhinos in the desert automatically but we still need to manually code web front-ends?
