2:13 - that's not a trick, that is actually years of practice.

@I_am_nobody999 Not really, this is actually classed under "cardistry" and card manipulation.

@Foxtrox7616 "what example could you give of a trick that is not a practiced skill?" It is not about that. It is about whether a trick can be advertised as such. If it can, it is not a trick. The Perfect Shuffle has been talked openly by magicians on TV and it has never been considered a secret. On the other hand, The Pass requires just as much skill, and yet it is a trick, and whenever it is used, the audience is not supposed to know what is being done or undone in the deck. Whereas with a perfect shuffle, the whole point is that they know this is real and it takes skill and therefore you are showing your skill to them after you've advertised exactly what you are going to do.

@sphinxtan9158 The point is this is a high-skill move that is usually categorized under card manipulation and not really ever presented as a trick. For instance, a perfect shuffle is usually presented with a patter explaining what it is and how it is actually a skill, and it usually ends in applause. I have never seen the perfect shuffle presented as a magic trick in itself. For a quick example, Penn and Teller (well, just Penn) have talked several times openly about the perfect shuffle and complimented the performers on doing it well. I don't see anyone treating it as a secret either. And for a final point, it is usually taught in card shark tutorials which are all about card manipulation and not about tricks.

@therealkevinhart But within the terminology of magic, it is not a trick - it is cardistry, or card manipulation.

@therealkevinhart Right, in magic it only means the deceitful tricks, not the other tricks for entertainment - those are called "flourishes" in magic.
