  8. Greetings from Western Australia Jay. Yes I stayed until the end...who in their right mind wouldnt? Loved your video and am now a new subscriber. I love all things cold and snowy and cant wait to see some more of your vids. Im a 70 yr old and live my adventures through other peoples lives...used to live in Tasmania (Aust) and we got down to minus 8 on a cold night but nothing like what you share, so thank you so much for the enjoyment. I love corned beef sandwiches or corn beef and fried veg - bit of pickle on the side Tuna or salmon sandwiches are great too. But do wonder..in Oz we add water to our canned soups do you not need to do that with yours..eg are they meant to be eaten the way you did? Keep the great content coming and I hope scammers dont ruin things for you.

I dont know which I love more poppies or roses (perfumed of course)..or violets or maybe Love in the Mist..mmmm I see all of those lawns and pray they dont use herbicides, fertilisers etc which will run off into the river...do they have regulations?? I do hope so. I love the town sides where the walkways are lined with gorgeous flowers (maybe not this video but in general) Such a gorgeous mindful day gliding through the rain....it looks like Zephr is impersonating a kangaroo in that grass...arent you warey of snakes Vanessa sitting in allof that long grass...

  14. Looking on the Discover Wildlife site its very hard to tell the difference between otter and minx although it sees that otters are very shy and swim lower under the water. Minx are out and about day and night whereas otter prefer to hide in daylight. Minx are somewhat smaller than otters and and are much darker usually. Otters have a rounder nose...confused?? me too...does it matter they were both quite cute!! You are so lucky in the UK to have such amazing access to things like sea or river walks, forest and farmland walks...not a thing in Australia where people buy the land and put up No Trespassing signs everywhere....enjoy them while you can and thanks for sharing your journeys with us across the world Vanessa and Zephr

I got a lovely shot of the Alice Grace in her winter outfit, hope to turn it into a painting for you Vanessa. BTW I know its bad luck to rename boats, so is A G your name for her or was she so called when you bought her? Did you say 'lard balls?' I know what lard is, although not something used here so much these days but were the balls sold for human consumption or were they made especially for the birds?   19. Another beautiful vlog thanks Vanessa. It always amazes me that no matter what the weather wildlife/birds just take what comes. The ducks were happy to be 'walking on water' so to speak, and the swans just lay down and had a nap, the owl just gets on with finding his next meal...so peaceful. Whereas humans complain about the cold, lack of fuel (get out like Vanessa and walk...you'll soon get warm) etc etc...yet they obviously live in that area for a reason or why dont they move.....

  20. Before I forget I think you showed a painting of a fox in the previous video (or it could have been this one...so much to see and remember) I just wanted to say it was supurb!! Are you a naturalist Vanessa or do you have guide books to be knowing all of the flower, fish and bird names?? Very informative anyway, thanks for the relaxing journey..are those fish Carp, trout what...what a healthy thriving waterway, obviously no toxic drainage there!!

  22. I know people have suffered major losses but I cant understand why they are throwing everything out instead of cleaning some of it up.. like records.. because they got wet?? Wooden and plastic chairs and tables - because they are wet and dirty.. they will dry and you can sand them down? and it goes on. If someone was upcycling they would go to a 2nd hand store/op shop, garage sale and buy what those folk are throwing away.. Do the less fortunate/the uninsured who cant afford to throw everything away get to sort through that stuff? Or does it all go to the tip? Just asking the question as I don't live in a flood area or even in that state.. I am sorry for what you have all gone through...

  27. The is nothing wrong with Camilla as a person Im sure but if she loved Charles that much she should have told him not to marry Diana!!! She is a mistress of the king who along with him caused the ruin of Dianas life, and ultimately they were both the reason she died. They have to own that. I dont believe either of them have actually ever said "we're sorry we shouldnt have let the marriage go ahead, especially considering they kept up their affair after Charles married Di. Shame on them both and shame on you lady for trying to make out what a wonderful person Camilla is.

  31. Another good video thanks Peter..as the lady at the end said, they've worked all their lives they are now entitled to relax and enjoy their lives a bit. I live in Oz, Im 70, Ive worked since I was 15, it would be nice to live in a place like that (if I could afford it)..but a bit too big, actually way too big for my liking though. Tiny home communities would be more my style but each to his own. I think 'community' is the key word here... in 'real life' there is no sense of community any more, its everyone for themselves...people have to learn to live with each other again, to look out for each other, to share and come back to basics, what you need not what you want or what others have....cheers from Western Australia 🦘🦘🦘🙏

  32. Hi Vanessa(?) just came across your channel today, this wet wintery day in Western Australia, so hi, I am now a new subscriber...love your little stories. I do hope they caught whoever tried to kill the swans, so glad one at least was able to be rescued and found a new mate, they are such beautiful creatures, we tend to have more blacks than whites in Oz, it also being our state emblem in WA. You look at the narrow boats and think how much space there actually seems to be, then you look at the loch you are travelling through and go Whoa!! thats really narrow. I will have to start at the beginning for the why's and hows and who's of your story rather than ask you a 100 questions. Be safe out there, I love your narrative. I also love your bird photography. Your little yellow wagtails are so different to our large black and white ones who spread their tails and wag them sideways instead of up and down..keep your stories and videos coming they are so interesting to those of us on the other side of the world...PS I love your art journal, is it possible to turn your pages a little slower please? Your art work is lovely do you have web site? Thankyou its made my day seeing this :)

  34. What a journey guys..you'll be glad to see the end of that weed. I wonder if its been extra prolific because of your extraordinary heat this summer? At least the bio oil seems to be working well...was a bit concerned about Zephyr at the start he looked a bit stressed (do dogs get sea sick?) but he seemed like his normal self as the day went on. It fascinates me that no mattercwhere in the world...a swallows nest seems to look the same..I wonder how they manage that. Aussie farmers tend to kill wildlife off as it 'eats their crops" big or small..such a shame, then they pillage the trees and over graze their paddocks (fields)..the UK has it about right...

Im in my 70's now and glad I'm in my last decades of life and wont see the destruction but feel for my grandies. Rest in peace Joe I hope your legacy lives on in perpetuity. So sad Joe lost his library and seed stock in the fire, things like that cant be replaced.....thankyou for a great video Peter.   44. Theoretically if you put a piece of tape on your glass before using your diamond drill the glass shouldn't break. Maybe the drill bit was too big? You should be able to drill holes in flower pots, glass and most things with a D drill bit...poor Mr M.. was a nice effect though ha ha. I actually bought the bits myself but havent been game to use them yet...mmmmm maybe I will think on it a bit more :) I hope you didn't have trouble finding a replacement? All of those cute ducklings, I wonder how many mum ended up with in the end? Nature is rather cruel at times. Vanessa I've talked to you in the past about Slogger gumboots, that's exactly what you had on your feet in this vlog!! Maybe they have a different name but pretty much identical. BTW loved those 3 wheeler motor bikes...a ride on one of those is on my bucket list...

Mr M, 2...Zephyr, 3...Journals, coloured pencils, inks, 4...welly boots & wet weather gear, 5...books, 6...craft supplies, 7...beanie & scarf, 8....camera/drone, 9...cooking utensils, pots & pans...its hard dwindling down, when we sold up in Tassie and returned to WA we didnt think we could afford to buy another house as prices had gone up so we sold or gave away nearly everything we owned, thinking we would live in our caravan...came back, bought another house (what???) and regreted the clean out...oh well. I wonder what others do? Lovely video Vanessa..that statue on the spoil heap was magnificent..beautifully made. Its also amazing what plants we find clinging to life in isolated places - that spikey bog moss looked like a miniature forest, look how strong those daffs and iris were holding their heads high in the wind, strong in their raw element, not limp and weak like our domestic ones can be..who needs humans - nature gets along just fine without us!!! Thanks for a great video Vanessa...btw there is so much rubbish on Youtube these days and much of it computer generated rubbish or made up lies (its a pity we cant report a lot of it) but your vlogs are one of the few genuinely interesting, true, factual and very interesting and beautiful items out there.   58. The contrasts between the UK and Aust are amazing. I love your flowered walking/tow path/trails. No way would we be allowed to plant odds and ends from our garden like you did recently, nor scatter wild flower seeds etc, it would be frowned upon and we would be told the plants will encroach into the bush and become a nuisance...I love your way better.. No way would we be picking our blackberries and certainly not eating them unwashed as they would have probably been sprayed instead of the hedges being habitat for wildlife...oh thats right the farmers have killed all of our wildlife...you way is much better...I remember blackberries in my youth especially when they grew next to an orchard before spraying was done and my arents would gather a few groundfalls and pick a few berries for a pie. The blackberries you buy in the shops now dont taste of anything really...I love your way better. Have thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of travelling up and down the locks with you Vanessa...thankyou so much. BTW I meant to say after seeing that cute bumble bee (I havent seen any of those on the mainland of Oz) since we lived in Tasmania...

Do you have or can you recommend a reference book on fungi or how are you so clever?? That poor goose. Yes I know about not feeding bread to wildlife but so many people do. The councils put up signs saying dont but they dont say why...I think this is so important...if people MUST feed the birds maybe an alternative could be suggested? Hope the heron and her eggs were OK after the storm..and that YOU had a happy Mothers Day too...You just reminded me by showing that journal that I actually have 2 books (journals) by Clare Walker Leslie not sure if you know of this lady. She is American. One book, the oldest (I think is a first edition 1987 or maybe not) 'A Naturalist's Sketchbook - Pages from the seasons of a Year' its in black & white..or yellow and brown really on a lovely soft paper. The other (not quite as nice to my liking but more up to date in colour and with glossy pages) and smaller by half...'Drawn to Nature'. The first one is s similar to how you do your little pictures at the end of your vlogs..I have been a lover of this kind of thing for decades and thank you for continuing my enjoyment in all things 'great and small', to coin a phrase. Happy days :)..I meant to say congrats to in the last video for finally getting flying swans on film...yey...

  75. ​ @mellow2990  Hi Steve, we have a lot of funny sayings in Australia we use them so often we forget the rest of the world hasn't a clue what we are talking about.... people think we are weird haha. Even though I know what awful things go on in the world around us I try not to think of them. I dont watch TV or go to the movies (or if I do I watch animated Disney ones with my teenage grandies) but read the books of my choice and watch vlogs like Vanessa's or Bryce's 'Living Big in Tiny Houses' which are all things nice and positive as are the people who also watch them ;) It does us no good to be negative or worry about what we cant change in this sometimes crazy and nasty world. Even though I know what awful things go on in the world around us I try not to think of them. I dont watch TV or go to the movies (or if I do I watch animated Disney ones with my teenage grandies) but read the books of my choice and watch vlogs like Vanessa's or Bryce's 'Living Big in Tiny Houses' which are all things nice and positive as are the people who also watch them ;) It does us no good to be negative or worry about what we cant change in this sometimes crazy and nasty world. Those Mandarin ducks are so stately..elegant or magestic cant quite figure out which describes them best. Love steam trains could practically smell it from WA. Hi Vanessa if I may say at the start of tis, I know its one of your early vids and maybe things have improved, but if not...its really hard to hear you when you sit at your table even when my volume is at 100%, then when you are out and about or the music comes on it comes up really loud....anyhoo....your pics of the kites are magnificent and I loved the swans bobbing up and down at your window in the current...have you thought about getting walking poles for your steep walks, especially if you have asthma? Or even a walking stick?   96. Humans have so much to answer for.. what they are doing to our planet.. destroying our forests, making extinct our animal, bird and insect life. Wiping out the Amazon, Madagascar and another I watched last night but cant remember to name a few...Chernobyl is a prime example of that..20K years before it will be safe and who knows if that will still be the case. What happened to the other 3 reactors? Will they remain to explode another day or have they been dismantled in some way (excuse my ignorance on this subject).. Only tonight on TV 21/03/25 I saw where an iceberg had calved off somewhere and exposed marine life unknown to humans and what did the humans do.. straight away they sent down a gadget to retrieve some and they started chopping them up to experiment on them, couldn't they have least waited 5 minutes and watched them in a tank of water first?...these scientists 'just happened to be on the spot.. shame shame!!! Thanks Netflix for showing these videos for free.. maybe someone, somewhere will take notice and do something about this atrocious destruction of our beautiful world.

They are photogenic..I love the creamy softness of their colouring and like me they like to stay away from the hustle and bustle of life......I think I would love to come back as an albatross and spend my next life soaring the updrafts of those magnificent wild oceans. My 2nd choice would be the pelican because they are so beautiful (well our Aussie ones are - although Ive seen some pretty ugly brown ones around..not sure which country) yet so funny and often clumsy in their antics...

Do you rent or buy a permanent spot along the canals? I must admit in some of your other vlogs they looked a bit messy.   121. If you get a good hot fire going it should burn off some of the creasote. We have little metal bricks here in Oz called Smart Burn which you put in the corner pof your fire and it keeps everything clean, not cheap but effective. I agree with 'cigarsnguitars' too that pine is really bad for creasote buildup..all that sap youre burning...

You would make a lot of people sad if you stopped but are you both enjoying it, is there more to see or are you back tracking now? And you might not be able to say anything but I can...wasnt the water rough enough without that idiot in the white boat speeding on through with no consideration for others grrrrr . The big question...can the monarchy survive a King Charles and Queen Camilla???...well Camilla got exactly what she has aimed for all of her life..I think Charles will fall by the wayside or at least not be able to stand the stress and pace of his Kingdom - he's already showing signs of stress and he's only been King for a few days - mind you I do think the royal family should have been allowed to grieve before all of the farce/pomp and ceremony of the Queens funeral - I also dont think William & Kates kids should have been dragged along and made to stand for hours...and yes I am one of the over 40's who condemn Charles for doing the dirty on Diana. C & C will get what they deserve in the end. Sadly I think it will also ruin William & Katherines lives/marriage too as he is too much like his dad and a bit behind the times....and I think Australia amongst others should take this time to break away from the monarchy.

Hi Vanessa I saw one of your more recent vlogs today and said I would start from scratch so here I am..good job Im retired I have a few to catch up with ha ha...You can see why the Kite is so called and now looking at that final sketch you can see why humans are now imitating the design in their wing suits for jumping off cliffs (if you are crazy or brave enough). I (well my hubby) have still not found a copy of Edith Holden's "Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady" not even in my library, I'll have to try some old 2nd hand book shops **nope that said I have just found a copy online 1978 version, they even have another book (a Year Book - Diary/planner) with the same poppy cover as yours. I'll let you know how I go . Thankyou so much for showing my cards its means a lot to me that you are still enjoying them. I will have to send you some more...via India..(Actually all the trouble we had last time I think my package really did actually go via India LOL) I have her address from the calendar.   164.  @themindfulnarrowboat  Hi Vanessa heat not going anywhere soon. Our summer started 1st Dec but by Feb its only just getting going, wont cool off until about end March/April. I think our weather patterns are so out of sync these days, what about in the UK? Seems like here in WA our summers run for 5-6 months, ironically when we lived in Tasmania we often had our fire burning 24/7 365 days a year...got my Diary of an Ed lady today. Thought your book was bigger eg A4 size mine was only A5 . But as disappointed as I was with the size the rest is great. Love her paintings and poetry. Is that where you got your idea to do yours that way? So sad she died so young. What a life she could have lived!! Take care, keep warm, yes you are right so much easier to keep warm...winter is my all time favourite season, I feel so sorry for those who get depressed during cold dark times..its time to put on your coat & beanie lovely people and get out and see what nature has to offer....

  179. Bit cheeky pinching your mooring Vanessa!! Didnt know the males and females were the same colour our wrens are slightly different depending n the area. We have (red) robin red breasts (the male having the colour and the female not so much and smaller) here and blue wrens which are totally iridescent blue from head to foot (males, females a tawny colour) I will send you some pics of them. Dont you just love Robertsons Fruit Mince...I cant count how many dozens of jars I have used over the years...love your pretty blue fairy lights, our little town here decorates the shops in winter for the winter festival...but our winter is June July Aug. BTW have you tried watercolour pencils? They are a lot of fun and you get a softer finish than coloured pencils..the trick there is to put several light coats of colour rather than one heavy one..just a little tip..

  182. If Charles had had the decency to be open about his relationship with Camilla from the start Diana would probably be alive today. Of course there would be no William & Harry etc etc etc but I for one would have still had respect for Charles. I have never liked Camilla for what she has done but she got her wish to be Queen. How is is that she is Queen to Charles the King, but Prince Phillip wasnt King to his Queen...how does that work????? I saw one film clip after the Queen had died where Camilla practically jumped out of the car and raced to shake hands with 'her' public, when her husband the King hadnt even made it out of the car...no 3 paces behind as consort for that one like Prince Phillip used to do. This new royal family is a whole new kettle of fish. I wonder how many countries etc will now break away from the royals, and will Scotland be one of them? Australia? BTW I dont believe I ever heard Charles call Diana his beloved wife (or however he described Camilla in this video).. not once!!! Nor show her any public affection...it was all an act.

  184. Thats for sure!! Even in Australia the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is the same. I think they get a small amount from the govt but its mostly public funded. I think these services all over the world should be fully paid for by their govts. Afterall it saves the govt millions of $ or pounds every year and saves 100's of lives. Especially in the outback of Oz, RFDS only uses small planes I believe not helicopters like UK but we all need them. Even Ive used them myself. cheers from Western Aust.

Show what you see eg birds I would never see in Oz,, stunning scenery I also wouldnt see in Oz. You meet interesting characters like ?Allan doing up the donated or abandoned (people really do that??) NB's for ex Vets. I love your artistry (photography, poems and sketches in your journals)..you are different to the rest. My comment re the endings was more that at the start you told us what was happening then it was "sit back, relax and enjoy the mindful meanderings" I just thought the mindful part seemed to be shorter, and if people cut off before viewing that, then that's sad because that's the whole point of your channel. Dont change anything, mine was just a comment. You are terrific. Everyone is looking for different things about narrowboating and thats fine. I happen to like your channel best BECAUSE of its content not because of what it doesnt have like someone else...if you understand my waffle...maybe its my Aussie accent LOL

Even the pesky weed looked really pretty...Is the little wooden boat (dingy) new, I dont remember seeing it before.   194. Hi from WA Vanessa. Well while you are freezing your bum off 🤭 we are sweltering in WA. Interesting to note you have an influx of birds but since this week of low to mid 30 deg C weather our birds have all but disappeared, even our foot long black skinks (lizards) and they only came out of hybernation a couple of months ago. I have bird baths all through the garden but the only birds Ive seen have been our bronze wing doves and the odd rosella (parrot). I love the contrast of your deep green fields to our already dry crisp yellow paddocks and our summer has barely started. I love to see your frozen waterways..keeps me cool, although a bane of your life no doubt. Your photography is stunning as always and your art work, something to be proud of dear friend. Im doing catchup here as usual but I think you might have put an otter or king fisher on the other side of your boat. It will be interesting to see what others thought when I watch the next episode. It always amazes me what you see in the woods when you float by when I have to replay your video 1/2 doz times to see what you saw 🤭🤭🤭 this time being the grey squirrel well done. Xx

Up north our folk have had the worst floods in history, over east its not much better..here in Bridgy we are lucky if we see a cloud in the sky and are busy watching out for bushfires...its a crazy world. In the UK you are freezing your bum off... poor Vanessa... warm hugs to you and big thanks for stepping outside your comfort zone, although really you do thrive once out and about. Your bird photography in this video is beautiful. Aren't you clever teaching Zephyr to wipe her feet or was that a fluke?? But I do think Charles as king should now step up as the better man and mend this rift while he can. My favourite artist of all time Canadian Cory Trepanier (RIP) used to hike the Canadian Arctic with his camera and oil paints and paint in similar conditions with thousands of mosquitoes to contend with.. Here it was absolutely at sub zero temps and he would be picking the mozzies off his painting and spitting them out of his mouth too...if he can do it Vanessa so can you. You are both awesome!! BTW what an fantastic legacy for sir David A...and great that Zephyr could explore it too...you dont get that in Oz...dogs arent normally allowed on public transport I dont believe nor in National Parks...Zeph couldnt wait to get on that tram!

  228.  @themindfulnarrowboat  LOL its not really that bad Vanessa, well I dont know about the funnel webs Im glad we dont have them in WA. Redbacks are more found in old drains, outhouses (outdoor toilets), under fence caps etc you might get the occasional one inside but you would have to be a pretty bad housekeeper for that to happen...that said I check for huntsmens I hate those, big and hairy and move fast..tend to come in when its going to rain especially if you live in the bush. I will send you that hawk photo I promised by email and I will tell you a little spider story there too

  229. Why did you not have enough fuel? Safety first Jay!! In Oz we usually say dont let your tank get below half and fuel up at every stop if you are travelling places like the Nullarbor or other long distance travel sparsely habitated as the next fuel stop might not have had a delivery and its a long way to the next one...not so many stops your way but a full jerry of fuel taken with you or left at the tent might be good..if thats something you can safely do, want to keep watching your vids cheers from Western Australia

Ah Vanessa I watched you trudge up that hill with your trolley and thought...you need to harness Zephyr the wonder dog to it and if you walk along with a ball or stick he is sure to follow 🤭🤭 seriously!! Michael P..brrr minus 8 is that F or C? We used to get minus 8 C in Tasmania and that froze our pipes...I admit it was a bit chilly, but no snow. A friend in the States gets a minus 8 F and he would be snowed in...keep warm🤗. Vanesa you always find interesting characters on your walks and Zeph doesnt seem to mind the cold..does he ever wear boots? Clever little bird walking on ice to forage ..and lovely man feeding the birds..."feed the birds tuppence a bag...🎶🎵🎼" Mary Poppins will always be one of my fav movies.   233.  @themindfulnarrowboat  Staying sensible..noooo it was 35 deg C today...Summer started on 1st Dec and Im over it thankyou very much. But they do say it will cool down a little over the next week. And with a cyclone off the coast up north we are hopeful of some rains in a week or so.

Well done Mr M those tunnels look scarey they really need traffic lights ... those locks look sooooo narrow how wide are they compared to your boat Vanessa? Poor Mr Fox looked a bit mangy, not like that magnificent one of a few months ago....looking a bit lean over the winter months...keep the vlogs coming Vanessa I for one am really really enjoying them...hope you still enjoy making them.   236. Wow where do I start..dot points I think.. Bill Fen Marina gorgeous, what a lovely place for a few days rest. Love peacocks those teal/blue/purple colours so pretty. Rainbow eucalyptus have never seen one of those in WA Vanessa. I saw a gorgeous camouflage coloured one the other day all olive greens and burgundy's and when the trees, all eucalyptus shed their skins/bark they are the most huggable trees ever, so velvety and tactile. But beware in a fire they will explode!!! Luckily the park behind us is full of European trees like the oak.. The stunning kingfisher seems to pop up quite often these days and that orb spider (hate spiders!!) was quite something else...this was well worth watching a second time... happy and safe travels xx

  237.  @themindfulnarrowboat  not sure about planting oaks etc around eucalyptus yours are really slow growing and ours grow really tall. It's the oils that explode well before the fire gets to the trees...thanks for the heads up on the spiders..not not much of a phobic. All good xx
