I dont know which I love more poppies or roses (perfumed of course)..or violets or maybe Love in the Mist..mmmm I see all of those lawns and pray they dont use herbicides, fertilisers etc which will run off into the river...do they have regulations?? I do hope so. I love the town sides where the walkways are lined with gorgeous flowers (maybe not this video but in general) Such a gorgeous mindful day gliding through the rain....it looks like Zephr is impersonating a kangaroo in that grass...arent you warey of snakes Vanessa sitting in allof that long grass...

  5. Looking on the Discover Wildlife site its very hard to tell the difference between otter and minx although it sees that otters are very shy and swim lower under the water. Minx are out and about day and night whereas otter prefer to hide in daylight. Minx are somewhat smaller than otters and and are much darker usually. Otters have a rounder nose...confused?? me too...does it matter they were both quite cute!! You are so lucky in the UK to have such amazing access to things like sea or river walks, forest and farmland walks...not a thing in Australia where people buy the land and put up No Trespassing signs everywhere....enjoy them while you can and thanks for sharing your journeys with us across the world Vanessa and Zephr

  6. Never heard of a haikus must be an English thing? Oh I so love snow, not a lot in WA. I got a lovely shot of the Alice Grace in her winter outfit, hope to turn it into a painting for you Vanessa. BTW I know its bad luck to rename boats, so is A G your name for her or was she so called when you bought her? Did you say 'lard balls?' I know what lard is, although not something used here so much these days but were the balls sold for human consumption or were they made especially for the birds? Keep these coming, I will be sad when Im caught up and have to wait a week for the next installment. cheers from WA :)

  8. Another beautiful vlog thanks Vanessa. It always amazes me that no matter what the weather wildlife/birds just take what comes. The ducks were happy to be 'walking on water' so to speak, and the swans just lay down and had a nap, the owl just gets on with finding his next meal...so peaceful. Whereas humans complain about the cold, lack of fuel (get out like Vanessa and walk...you'll soon get warm) etc etc...yet they obviously live in that area for a reason or why dont they move.....

  9. Before I forget I think you showed a painting of a fox in the previous video (or it could have been this one...so much to see and remember) I just wanted to say it was supurb!! Are you a naturalist Vanessa or do you have guide books to be knowing all of the flower, fish and bird names?? Very informative anyway, thanks for the relaxing journey..are those fish Carp, trout what...what a healthy thriving waterway, obviously no toxic drainage there!!

  10. Hi Vanessa(?) just came across your channel today, this wet wintery day in Western Australia, so hi, I am now a new subscriber...love your little stories. I do hope they caught whoever tried to kill the swans, so glad one at least was able to be rescued and found a new mate, they are such beautiful creatures, we tend to have more blacks than whites in Oz, it also being our state emblem in WA. You look at the narrow boats and think how much space there actually seems to be, then you look at the loch you are travelling through and go Whoa!! thats really narrow. I will have to start at the beginning for the why's and hows and who's of your story rather than ask you a 100 questions. Be safe out there, I love your narrative. I also love your bird photography. Your little yellow wagtails are so different to our large black and white ones who spread their tails and wag them sideways instead of up and down..keep your stories and videos coming they are so interesting to those of us on the other side of the world...PS I love your art journal, is it possible to turn your pages a little slower please? Your art work is lovely do you have web site? Thankyou its made my day seeing this :)

  12. What a journey guys..you'll be glad to see the end of that weed. I wonder if its been extra prolific because of your extraordinary heat this summer? At least the bio oil seems to be working well...was a bit concerned about Zephyr at the start he looked a bit stressed (do dogs get sea sick?) but he seemed like his normal self as the day went on. It fascinates me that no mattercwhere in the world...a swallows nest seems to look the same..I wonder how they manage that. Aussie farmers tend to kill wildlife off as it 'eats their crops" big or small..such a shame, then they pillage the trees and over graze their paddocks (fields)..the UK has it about right...

It would be a pleasure Vanessa...really, you bring joy and beauty to my sometime drab world...I could think of nothing better to do :) ...so you nearly left Mr M behind.. that'll teach him to pay attention...truthfully I thought you might keep him bound and gagged in the bows...you open the gates, drive the boat, flirt with the lock keepers, keep us entertained...what does your man do//the cooking maybe..is he whipping up a storm down below decks...ha ha.   18. Theoretically if you put a piece of tape on your glass before using your diamond drill the glass shouldn't break. Maybe the drill bit was too big? You should be able to drill holes in flower pots, glass and most things with a D drill bit...poor Mr M.. was a nice effect though ha ha. I actually bought the bits myself but havent been game to use them yet...mmmmm maybe I will think on it a bit more :) I hope you didn't have trouble finding a replacement? All of those cute ducklings, I wonder how many mum ended up with in the end? Nature is rather cruel at times. Vanessa I've talked to you in the past about Slogger gumboots, that's exactly what you had on your feet in this vlog!! Maybe they have a different name but pretty much identical. BTW loved those 3 wheeler motor bikes...a ride on one of those is on my bucket list...

You're right this journey is all about you and your lovely family, but you take the time to share it all with us and for that I am most appreciative.. Love that stick swing, Zephyr is such a crazy hound...she wasnt going to let that stick get away..I mean "look at the size of it!!"

  24. The contrasts between the UK and Aust are amazing. I love your flowered walking/tow path/trails. No way would we be allowed to plant odds and ends from our garden like you did recently, nor scatter wild flower seeds etc, it would be frowned upon and we would be told the plants will encroach into the bush and become a nuisance...I love your way better.. No way would we be picking our blackberries and certainly not eating them unwashed as they would have probably been sprayed instead of the hedges being habitat for wildlife...oh thats right the farmers have killed all of our wildlife...you way is much better...I remember blackberries in my youth especially when they grew next to an orchard before spraying was done and my arents would gather a few groundfalls and pick a few berries for a pie. The blackberries you buy in the shops now dont taste of anything really...I love your way better. Have thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of travelling up and down the locks with you Vanessa...thankyou so much. BTW I meant to say after seeing that cute bumble bee (I havent seen any of those on the mainland of Oz) since we lived in Tasmania...

Such a delicate fungi, a fairy wonderland (sorry but couldn't resist sending you one more little video on email, as I also share a love of fungi. Do you have or can you recommend a reference book on fungi or how are you so clever?? That poor goose. Yes I know about not feeding bread to wildlife but so many people do. The councils put up signs saying dont but they dont say why...I think this is so important...if people MUST feed the birds maybe an alternative could be suggested? Sounds like you have quite the dilemma going on with your code red.. best part of watching back issues I dont have to wait for next week to see what happens ha ha, cheers from the west :)

Hope the heron and her eggs were OK after the storm..and that YOU had a happy Mothers Day too...You just reminded me by showing that journal that I actually have 2 books (journals) by Clare Walker Leslie not sure if you know of this lady. She is American. One book, the oldest (I think is a first edition 1987 or maybe not) 'A Naturalist's Sketchbook - Pages from the seasons of a Year' its in black & white..or yellow and brown really on a lovely soft paper. The other (not quite as nice to my liking but more up to date in colour and with glossy pages) and smaller by half...'Drawn to Nature'. The first one is s similar to how you do your little pictures at the end of your vlogs..I have been a lover of this kind of thing for decades and thank you for continuing my enjoyment in all things 'great and small', to coin a phrase. Happy days :)..I meant to say congrats to in the last video for finally getting flying swans on film...yey...

'Mushy peas'.. how does this weed become such a problem in certain areas is it transferred by the boats, drainage from farms, or what??? Your photography is beautiful as usual. Those lovely parrots have the soft green look of love birds dont you think, although bigger. I so enjoy looking at nature on your channel Vanessa but seems not everyone is armoured with the monkjac..apparently its legal in the UK to shoot them (fun apparently) and eat them (delicious)...makes me want to turn vegetarian!! Those Mandarin ducks are so stately..elegant or magestic cant quite figure out which describes them best. Love steam trains could practically smell it from WA. Hi Vanessa if I may say at the start of tis, I know its one of your early vids and maybe things have improved, but if not...its really hard to hear you when you sit at your table even when my volume is at 100%, then when you are out and about or the music comes on it comes up really loud....anyhoo....your pics of the kites are magnificent and I loved the swans bobbing up and down at your window in the current...have you thought about getting walking poles for your steep walks, especially if you have asthma? Or even a walking stick? Oh I see Im up to vid #21..only 2 more years worth to go yoo hoo..cheers from west Oz...btw our 2 Griffons loved yoghurt have you tried Zeph with that Im sure she would love it and less sugar....

  54. Here's 2 deep and meaningfuls for you Vanessa...we know what you get out of narrowboating but what pleasures does Mr M get? And this is your 5th year do you have plans to continue? You would make a lot of people sad if you stopped but are you both enjoying it, is there more to see or are you back tracking now? You have given so many people all over the world a chance to explore the UK without getting wet, getting cold, having to fly a long way its been an awesome journey but I for one dont want it to stop!!! As to journalling you already do it justice in your own way Vanessa. Dont under rate yourself, so many of us wish we had a little of your many talents your art, your vlogs, poetry and photography are amazing. You've got talent girlfriend!!!   55. Thanks for the journey Vanessa that blue barge was lovely, not as lovely as AG of course but lovely all the same - it must be alot more difficult to take something that size through the locks. And you might not be able to say anything but I can...wasnt the water rough enough without that idiot in the white boat speeding on through with no consideration for others grrrrr . Do they have cleanup crews for the rivers, do you have to report water hazzards or how does that work? I love the idea of makingbthat wildlife area during Covid, encouraging people to get out and be healthy. Hi Vanessa I saw one of your more recent vlogs today and said I would start from scratch so here I am..good job Im retired I have a few to catch up with ha ha...You can see why the Kite is so called and now looking at that final sketch you can see why humans are now imitating the design in their wing suits for jumping off cliffs (if you are crazy or brave enough). Thanks for a lovely bit of scenery watching...I dont do social media FB etc so this is all I have to go by...do you have a beginning story as to why you are on the narrow boat. Vanessa that was a seriously great vlog..your nature photography was exceptional!! Even clicked a couple of shots myself (I know I've asked before and you said you didnt mind...hope thats still the case) to try to paint thanks for the inspiration. How you see the tiny fungi in a hole in the tree or a robin/wren popping in and out of a nest in the undergrowth beats me..I love that you live in the moment it is how I like to live too..thanks so much for the enjoyment and I think its great you included the gate loch boys in your poem, and wasnt little Freya a cutie, I will be checking out her channel as well. Something else which came to my attention in this vlog was throughout all of your beautiful writing in your journal I have never seen one mistake or crossed out letter....safe travels and love from Western Australia xx

  68. Well done you Vanessa what a very special find getting that book at Packwood House, and what a gorgeous place. I (well my hubby) have still not found a copy of Edith Holden's "Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady" not even in my library, I'll have to try some old 2nd hand book shops **nope that said I have just found a copy online 1978 version, they even have another book (a Year Book - Diary/planner) with the same poppy cover as yours. I'll let you know how I go . Thankyou so much for showing my cards its means a lot to me that you are still enjoying them. I will have to send you some more...via India..(Actually all the trouble we had last time I think my package really did actually go via India LOL) I have her address from the calendar.   71. Thanks Vanessa for another lovely episode, thanks to India too. It seems to becoming a habit of yours to look for old cottages only to find a new house built in its place. Its a pity the guide brochures don't give more info on that. That WAS a gorgeous gate, well done to the artist who created it. Poor Zeph she was really in her protective mode wasn't she, such a caring young lady. Gosh I love your bird life, that cute Robin, nuthatch and that stunning white egret.. having a heatwave this week in west Oz, with temps in the mid to high 30's C - he last 2 have both been 37 deg C, want to swap, would gladly do so...and you didnt get to the Cadburys factory yet. Keep meaning to ask if the loch gates were always all opened wouldnt there be enough water as leveled out? Or would it leak out somewhere?   76. Bit cheeky pinching your mooring Vanessa!! Didnt know the males and females were the same colour our wrens are slightly different depending n the area. We have (red) robin red breasts (the male having the colour and the female not so much and smaller) here and blue wrens which are totally iridescent blue from head to foot (males, females a tawny colour) I will send you some pics of them. Dont you just love Robertsons Fruit Mince...I cant count how many dozens of jars I have used over the years...love your pretty blue fairy lights, our little town here decorates the shops in winter for the winter festival...but our winter is June July Aug. BTW have you tried watercolour pencils? They are a lot of fun and you get a softer finish than coloured pencils..the trick there is to put several light coats of colour rather than one heavy one..just a little tip..

  80. Im with Brewster Vanessa, the photography in this vlog was awesome...the golden glows on the sides of the NB's so beautiful. The sunsets on the water. Even the pesky weed looked really pretty...Is the little wooden boat (dingy) new, I dont remember seeing it before. Glad Mr M and helpers fixed the engine and that the recycled vege oil is going well. Needs a bit more practice in tossing and catching his dinner or he was just having fun with a dead fish? Thats one bird Ive never seen but they are related to the Kookaburra I think so we at least have those in WA, (I think they are quite common in other parts of Oz), although some say they are an introduced species.. frankly I dont care, I love all wildlife.. well mostly anyway...   82. Hi from WA Vanessa. Well while you are freezing your bum off 🤭 we are sweltering in WA. Interesting to note you have an influx of birds but since this week of low to mid 30 deg C weather our birds have all but disappeared, even our foot long black skinks (lizards) and they only came out of hybernation a couple of months ago. I have bird baths all through the garden but the only birds Ive seen have been our bronze wing doves and the odd rosella (parrot). I love the contrast of your deep green fields to our already dry crisp yellow paddocks and our summer has barely started. I love to see your frozen waterways..keeps me cool, although a bane of your life no doubt. Your photography is stunning as always and your art work, something to be proud of dear friend. Im doing catchup here as usual but I think you might have put an otter or king fisher on the other side of your boat. It will be interesting to see what others thought when I watch the next episode. It always amazes me what you see in the woods when you float by when I have to replay your video 1/2 doz times to see what you saw 🤭🤭🤭 this time being the grey squirrel well done. Xx

You are looking well...what beautiful scenery on that journey...UK has such pretty waterways, so often NOT seen by tourists. Cant believe your summer is over already, ours goes on for about 6 months in Western Aust....I would love to go back to the 4 seasons of my childhood...summer is not my favourite at all...take care yourselves, travel safe and keep smiling....

Oh Vanessa you outdid yourself today.. the photos of the ducks (I could never duck dive boo hoo) and the swan with the diamond drops of water on her feathers was just stunning, I just had to capture a shot of that for a future drawing. Question: (like I never ever ask any LOL) has Zeph ever jumped overboard when you're travelling? I continually am amazed that she never seems to bark and the wildlife she's amazing!!

  89. Greetings from very hot (high 30's C deg) and very wet WA. Up north our folk have had the worst floods in history, over east its not much better..here in Bridgy we are lucky if we see a cloud in the sky and are busy watching out for bushfires...its a crazy world. In the UK you are freezing your bum off... poor Vanessa... warm hugs to you and big thanks for stepping outside your comfort zone, although really you do thrive once out and about. Your bird photography in this video is beautiful. Aren't you clever teaching Zephyr to wipe her feet or was that a fluke?? My favourite artist of all time Canadian Cory Trepanier (RIP) used to hike the Canadian Arctic with his camera and oil paints and paint in similar conditions with thousands of mosquitoes to contend with.. Here it was absolutely at sub zero temps and he would be picking the mozzies off his painting and spitting them out of his mouth too...if he can do it Vanessa so can you. You are both awesome!! BTW what an fantastic legacy for sir David A...and great that Zephyr could explore it too...you dont get that in Oz...dogs arent normally allowed on public transport I dont believe nor in National Parks...Zeph couldnt wait to get on that tram!

Ah Vanessa I watched you trudge up that hill with your trolley and thought...you need to harness Zephyr the wonder dog to it and if you walk along with a ball or stick he is sure to follow 🤭🤭 seriously!! Michael P..brrr minus 8 is that F or C? We used to get minus 8 C in Tasmania and that froze our pipes...I admit it was a bit chilly, but no snow. A friend in the States gets a minus 8 F and he would be snowed in...keep warm🤗.   107. Wow where do I start..dot points I think.. Bill Fen Marina gorgeous, what a lovely place for a few days rest. Love peacocks those teal/blue/purple colours so pretty. Rainbow eucalyptus have never seen one of those in WA Vanessa. I saw a gorgeous camouflage coloured one the other day all olive greens and burgundy's and when the trees, all eucalyptus shed their skins/bark they are the most huggable trees ever, so velvety and tactile. But beware in a fire they will explode!!! Luckily the park behind us is full of European trees like the oak.. The stunning kingfisher seems to pop up quite often these days and that orb spider (hate spiders!!) was quite something else...this was well worth watching a second time... happy and safe travels xx
