@peepeevs For me its felt like that since a certain event in 2001.

The punishment for not following the commands can be much worse than just losing your job. Like getting sent to the gulag or conscripted. And the students are actively being pressured to report non-compliant behaviour from adults. Again, straight from the 1940s textbook.

The book burnings started a while ago to be frank.

@cyan_oxy6734 There is such a thing as a national culture and culture east of Poland and the Baltic states does seem to consistently be more authoritarian than to the west. That isnt saying that the people are incapable of it, just that their culture seems unsuited to it. It would take a lot of radical changes to change that. And dont forget, in western european countries, many bloody civil wars were fought to change those systems. The French and English had many revolutions, and in Germany it took not just a 30 year religious war between the catholics and protestants, but also Napoleon forcibly dismantling the HRE and then 2 world wars to break the system of imperialism. That process also took 100s of years.

Repairing that with frozen ground is not difficult, its impossible.

@archduke2277 Th only thing that would change for people in rural areas is that they would pay less taxes and they wont get conscripted into the army. Other than that it doesnt seem like they would feel any impact.

Well, the progress has been quite slow over the past couple hundred years, so at this rate they will never catch up. But there is always hope.

Its sad to see, during cold war at least they were acting somewhat rationally and it was the US trying to start ww3 during the Cuba crisis for example. Now the roles seem reversed.
2
@bca-biciclindcuaxel7527 you mean in the current situation? Its not directly comparable to Cuba crisis. In that conflict the US was agressor by putting missiles in Turkey in range of USSR and they responded by putting missiles in range of USA, and then USA tried to start ww3. This current war is a proxy ground war between Russia and NATO fought in Ukraine. The thing I meant to say is that now the other side is the aggressor starting the conflict.

In Netherlands we say, if everyone else jumps off a bridge, would you jump too?

@danzoom Far left is definitely a problem outside of the internet. Instead of talking about the wealth gap and representing the working class, left parties are talking about social progressive nonsense like gender neutral bathrooms and non existent gender wage gap, which takes away time and attention from real problems that they should be working on. If there was any competent left wing parties in Europe that actually try to represent ordinary people then they would get a lot of votes.

In America, people worship celebrity actors and musicians. Same thing, but different.

How did imperialism end in other countries in Europe? There is the answer to your question.

We do a little bit of trolling

@bca-biciclindcuaxel7527 After euromaidan in 2014 Ukraine got rid of pro-ruski oligarchs in government and expressed desire to join EU. There were never plans for Ukraine to join NATO or to put missiles there against Russia. NATO was content to have them as a neutral buffer state, same with Belarus and Sweden and Finland. But the idea of Ukraine going in western direction economically was enough to justify invasion for the Kremlin.

You'd think that, but not really, the nz propaganda works very well on a lot of Americans. Soviet propaganda too. Harris ran on a campaign of "joy" which is literally copied from those propaganda sources and 48% of the country voted for her. And lets not even talk about the Republicans use of nationalist rhetoric. I think people in Europe are far more aware of these propaganda tactics because most of our families remember at least the stories from their parents who lived through years of war and/or occupation and had direct experience with it.
