  5.  @alexbuckenham1663  Its not clear who attacked first in either the film or the book. The book doesnt specify it, but it hints it may have been the humans who attacked first. In the movie, the opening scene where the aliens launch an asteroid is actually a flash forward to later in the story, but this isnt clearly explained so most people think thats the chronological beginning of the movie. That attack happens later, because after that opening scene, we get scenes of Rico talking to his parents who die in that asteroid strike, and those arent flashbacks. So, there isnt really a conclusive answer to that question, and its not the point of the story anyway.
