In most western countries, the socialist political parties we had, campaigned for things like 40 hour work week, better labor protection regulations, living wages, labor unions, mandatory work breaks, and other legal protections from exploitation by capitalists and corporations.
As well as social security measures like welfare, subsidies for healthcare and children, free schools and universities. State-operated utility companies like telephone companies, electricity companies, steel factories. Progressive tax rates. Price controls and production targets on milk, butter, grain, pork meat, etc, to prevent price fluctuations and over/undersupply of basic food items.
Basically we only had positive influence from socialist thinking and since we started to repeal some of those policies things are just getting worse.
Now utility companies are privatized, corporations increase prices and lower quality of product to maximize profit extracted from people. Energy is too expensive, public transportation is too expensive. Wages have not increased since the 1970s when adjusted for inflation.
Price controls are removed so farmers invest when the prices are high and then almost go bankrupt when prices drop because every farmer is overproducing milk.
Universities charge thousands of euros for education which means only people from wealthy families can afford to get a good education, which has a massive cost to society.
Corporations and rich people dont pay any taxes while working class people pay 50% or more of their income in tax and then half their net income on rent while they can never afford to buy a house because banks and pension funds are allowed to use our own savings to speculate against us on the housing market.
Labor regulations and banking regulations are being taken away so the elite can extract more profit from people.
So yeah there are good reasons why a lot of people think having more socialist policies would be good. Thats not saying we need to implement a full classless proletariat state where every business is state-owned and operated.
My comment keeps getting deleted idk why
