  1.  @Victor-yv8ru  not if you take into account the energy and material required to replace the batteries every 8 to 10 years, and the consequent climate costs. a battery pack for an electric car costs about 10 tonnes of CO2, which is equivalent to the 10 tonnes of CO2 it costs to make a petrol car. petrol cars usually last more than 10 years and expel about 3 tonnes of CO2 a year. so, lets say you buy a petrol car, drive it for 10 years, then sell it, you cost about 40 tonnes of CO2, 4 tonnes per year. the electric car, which will need its batteries replaced after 10 years, will cost 20 tonnes of CO2 to produce, (10 for the vehicle and 10 for the battery) then another 10 tonnes to replace the battery after 10 years, so youre already at 30 tonnes or 3/4 of the co2 cost of producing and operating a petrol car for a decade, just to produce the electric vehicle and batteries. then you also have to take into account that many components in batteries are non-recyclable and will end up in toxic waste dumps in third world countries. then you also need to take into account that a lot of the electricity used by these cars, isnt from renewable sources, but from fossil fuels. so the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is marginal at best, and more likely nonexistent. the costs arent actually going down, theyre just being externalized to poorer countries. the only reason electric cars are being advertised and subsidized is because of the interests of the car industry. the only viable solution to the transport problem, is electric public transport with guide lines, like trains, trams, metro, and bicycles. every other solution is trash and only being implemented to maintain status quo. everybody can calculate this with publicly available data and first grade math, but people just dont care. you dont care either. you just repeat things you hear and read without checking any of the numbers because math is boring, right? its way more fun to just sit back and watch the world burn.
