The real problem with logistics is that Russia has a different gauge rail than the rest of Europe. Coincidentally, because of being in the Soviet union for a long time and being more oriented on Russia until 2014, this is actually not a problem in Ukraine. They also use the wider Russian guage. The problem is that the railway lines connecting Russian rail system to Ukrainian, has been targeted by both sides to harm enemy logistics. This has been a common tactic since at least WW2 when both Germans and Allies targeted each others railway lines and hubs with fighters and bombers, and resistance would also sabotage tracks all the time in occupied territory. In my home town you can still see the bullet holes in the H beams of the train station. It is one of the few pre-war stations left in my country that hasnt been renovated. Additionally, Russia is having trouble getting the parts to keep their trains running due to all the sanctions.

Swedens GDP is about 600 billion USD, compared to 2 trillion on the other side. Theyre more comparable to Spain. Which is still not a lot, with countries like the UK, Germany and France having much larger economies by themselves.

@libertarianbydefault Yeah unfortunately that doesnt work in a global market. Not only does Ruzzia need to buy components for weapons on the international market, they have to pay well above market price because of the sanctions. Obviously the economy wont collapse right away but they certainly arent managing in a sustainable way. Sure, they have plenty of potatoes, but you cant put potato in a rocket launcher.

With Sweden and Finland in NATO, the border between NATO and Russia now stretches from the polar circle to Turkey, and there is only a gap at Ukraine. If Putin achieves the goal of conquering Ukraine, which was partially set to shorten the border with NATO and make it easier for Russia to defend itself, then they will have achieved the opposite and only made the border longer. Then they will go and invade more countries until they do achieve their goals. We have already seen there is no reasoning with these people. They wont stop. Putin probably wont stop until the old borders of the Russian empire pre WW-1 are restored. Or until he dies.

Or they stole the fuel and then Ukraine did blow it up. Its not like they arent targeting Russian depots and logistics lines across the border. In the end it doesnt really matter, what matters is that the fuel is no longer available for the Russian front.

That coal and iron traded to the Germans was literally done at gunpoint though, and the Germans couldnt afford to pay much for it because they were perpetually broke and their entire war economy ran on promissary notes. The government had to seize the gold stockpiles of every country they invaded just to pay off debts to their own industry. So its also important not to exaggerate things. Sweden like many other countries wanted to remain neutral and was forced by the Germans to cooperate or get invaded and stand no chance of defending itself.

@peabase Its a shame our government now rather gives the contracts to the French than to our own shipyards, Dutch submarines have always been top of the line. We really need to invest in our shipyards and with expanded military budgets this would have been the perfect time.

@nas4apps Im sorry, what? We look back at 14 years of Rutte eroding our welfare state and giving the money to his buddies at multinational corporations that dont pay taxes here. He also had a big hand in bringing our political system from a functional democracy to a system that has corrupt crony capitalists on one side and populist fearmongers on the other, with no one who actually cares about good governance. And in all those years he didnt do anything about a single problem we have, be it immigration, the widening wealth and income gap, failing government services like our unemployment office, tax agency, etc, while letting our bureaucracy get infiltrated by legions of extremely expensive consultants from the usual suspects like McKinsey and Deloitte who dont do anything except charge 200 euros per hour on projects that never end. Barely anyone is still having kids, people cant afford a place to live, there is only a small upper class left of less than 10% of the population that can afford anything. Most people are permanently in debt. Having a strong economy and low interest bonds doesnt help anyone if all the profit is flowing away and the people making that money dont pay taxes. Also, adjusted for inflation, our economy hasnt grown in decades, and real wage growth has been negative for even longer.

Uraine trying to reduce corruption and kick out oligarchs who are friends with Putin regime is one of the major reasons for the invasion. Youve got this completely backwards. Reducing corruption is also prerequisite for joining EU or NATO which is a stated goal of Ukrainian govt since 2014.
