  18. well they couldnt show a native american society having gender equality and depicting them having healthy interactions between men and women, that would imply certain implications that are not politically convenient. it would undermine their reactionary movement to show women not being oppressed in historical contexts. In realty, native american society was quite egalitarian and women did hunt. Especially when food was scarce or the men were at war, but even in regular times, they would at least hunt rabbits and other small stuff to feed the tribe. They were nomadic people, they couldt afford to just let the women sit around their tipis making bead necklaces, they would all starve lol.

  43. thats because they replaced all the sets with greenscreens. its hard for actors to immerse in a role when they are walking around in an empty green cube wearing motion tracking sensors on their entire body. the only man that can pull that off is Andy Serkis. contrast lotr vs the hobbit movies and compare the performances from great actors like cate blanchett, ian mckellan, orlando bloom. its a whole world of difference. lotr which had very minimal cgi work and insane amounts of practical effects, costumes, etc, got amazing once in a lifetime performances out of everyone. the hobbit was a soulless trainwreck and thats not just because the director got replaced and the story was spread out like butter on too much bread. its the entire way of filmmaking these days thats the problem. i have more fun watching conan movies with arnold, with their super low budget hand drawn animations and styrofoam sets, than i do watching any modern film.

It was still obvious though because Elendil is actually a character in the lore who is definitely not a bad guy, so he wasnt even in contention for the who is Sauron mystery because we already know he would go on to found Gondor after the fall of Numenor, and fight Sauron in person in the battle of the last alliance. His daughter was a more probable candidate.

  126. Hes been really good for decades. I think Minority Report is the first movie I saw him in, and that came out in '02! The Recruit, decent movie, would have been a lot worse without him in it and Al Pacino hamming it up. Alexander was a bit of a weird casting choice. In Bruges, great movie. Didnt like him in the Total Recall remake but that was just an unncessary cashgrab of a film in general. Didnt like the 2nd season of True Detective either. He has some misses. I think hes also one of those actors that prefers to do more serious smaller projects a lot instead of just going for blockbuster action movies. Looking at his imdb theres a whole list of dramas that Ive never heard of.

  134. you forgot to mention the hollywood writers strike a couple years back. the writers were unhappy with their meager pay so they striked and the studios refused to raise their pay so most of them quit. thats at least half the reason why everything hollywood makes these days sucks ass.

  135.  @Sergeant_Fury  yeah, and the crying becomes repetitive after a few episodes lol. what does annoy me is that now in season 3, they wrote out more than half of the straight male characters, ash tyler/voq, lorca, pike. and they introduced some kind of lgbtq or asexual thing in their place, along with one new straight male main character who gets significant screentime. the starfleet admiral and other supporting characters are straight male to give you the impression that its balanced but actually about half of the current main characters is something other than straight which if my math is correct is about 20x too much representation. so im starting to get to the point where its too much wokeness and diversity for me in the gender and sex aspect. im generally pretty quickly annoyed by it, but really in seasons 1 and 2 i didnt mind the wokeness levels too much. it was just the really bad alternate universe plot arc in 2nd half of 1st season. i kinda get the impression that drinker hated the show simply because of the fact it has a black female lead and a bad plot arc in S1.

  160. I watched the first season of the show in 1 day with my brother who has played the games. I havent played the games or read the books. All I knew going into it were the names of some of the characters and what a witcher is supposed to be. I had no idea what was going on, where I was or what timeline I was in at any point. They never even showed a map for 3 seconds so that at least you know where the good guys and the bad guys are and whats up and down. Also, if every faction is diverse, they all look the same.

  233. A story for little kids shouldnt have complex villains. Little kids dont have a nuanced moral system. Things are either good or bad. In stories for adults, having complex villains is fine, for example I recently watched the Jack Ryan series from amazon and every season has an understandable, complex, nuanced bad guy that you can empathize with and who is scary at the same time. But it can also be great fun to watch a good actor go completely ham on a cartoonishly evil character. Like, you shouldnt want to make Lex Luthor understandable in a Superman movie, even if its made for adults. The main issue I have isnt about how villains are portrayed, but rather that in a suspicious amount of productions, the protagonist is morally abject and the antagonist has better morals but is somehow still the bad guy of the story.

With labour productivity increasing like 300% over the past couple decades due to (computer) automation, about 25% of the people currently employed would need to work fulltime to keep a society running. I would dare to say that we would actually get more work done if we paid these people to stay out of the way. And maybe with all their free time, they would voluntarily go do something useful for society. That being said, I do agree Disney needs to reconsider who their target audience is. Their current focus group seems to consist solely of woke female yuppies, and those dont typically spend much on tv or movies, they have social media for their entertainment. At best theyll watch reality tv shows.

Its also super annoying having this extremely wimpy guy on screen all the time complaining about stuff and being useless. The scene where Butcher punched him, it was super obvious it was going to happen, and the plot had to have Hughie let Butcher punch him. You can even tell from the body language that the actor knew he was going to get punched. I dont think im a super macho guy, im a big nerd. i like watching movies and reading books, not working out at the gym. the way that these beta male characters are portrayed, i find that personally insulting. Its like the Big Bang Theory. its a caricature of nerdy guys. its making fun of me. and to make it even more insulting they need to give this wimpy male character an unrealistically attractive girlfriend that falls in love with him for no reason. because thats what all nerds want, right? ugh. this was already an overdone trope in the 80s. thats 40 years ago now. Revenge of the Nerds handled this trope better than this tv show. the actor is typecast, the character is useless, there is 0 chemistry between him and the actress playing Starlight.

Him going into Vought tower is only a liability because she has to get him out again. He's 100% useless. Has been for the whole show. He's just a blank slate character for male viewers to project themselves onto. I'd rather identify with butcher but hey to each their own. anyway the show would be much better without that whole character in it. just have starlight and butch and frenchie and kimiko. mothers milk was completely useless in this season as well and in season 1 his only job was to get butch to keep hughie around, and we already established hughie is useless.

As for Katee Sackhoff, I loved her in Battlestar Galactica, but, even though I didnt watch the Mandalorian for more than 3 episodes, I feel like this really tarnishes her legacy as a respectable sci-fi actress. I dont tihkn I can ever rewatch BSG without remembering this embarrassment, which is a shame because I really wanted to go and watch it again, its one of my favourite tv shows ever, but this just puts a nasty taste in my mouth. I just hope she really needed the money and it was worth it.

  278.  @thedragon8355  the reason markets collapse in the first place is because the banks take too many risks, because their mathematical models indicate they have a higher chance of gaining more on the short term by risking long term stability and they will get bailed out by the government if they are about to go bankrupt anyway because they own all the politicians. on top of that, if the bubble collapses, stocks go down, a bunch of people lose their jobs, life savings and their homes, which the banks can they buy up cheap in foreclosure and sell at a profit when the market recovers, so they make money on these crashes. its all by design. anyway, there is plenty of future to look forward to. all we have to do is end capitalism worldwide and start doing useful things with our time instead of using our best and brightest minds to create new financial tools to extract profit from poor people.

I just wish people would simply make one movie with a story they want to tell, and then maybe sequels if its a hit and everyone involved in the project wants to return, instead of planning out 3 or more movies from the start and then ending up telling no story in the first movie, its just a vehicle to set up plot points for the sequels. The best thing they could do is kill him off screen in between season 2 and 3. starlight and butcher dont need hughie, they have an interesting dynamic already, and the subplot of the french man slowly seducing the girl from The Ring is entertaining to watch as well. mothers milk is also completely useless this season, just send him back home to his family. with all the dead weight cut out maybe the show can actually move a bit faster.

Keanu Reeves in the Matrix is often cited as an example of this. The whole show from the first to last episode could be almost exactly the same scene for scene without him around to react to stuff.

I think Starlight and Butcher can have an interesting dynamic that was already hinted at, where she becomes a bit more pragmatic and less goody two-shoes, and he tries to behave a bit more politely on occasion and try a diplomatic approach instead of shooting before talking every time. That would be fun. The problem is that Hughie is a huge dead weight, a third wheel that they have to drag around and he takes up a lot of screentime. Write Hughie out and the problem is solved. I dont think he's a great character at all. He's just a blank slate, a standin for the male viewer to project himself onto.

  434.  @glebbokhan9777  Cavill was literally the only good thing about it. the special effects were bad, the witcher song was cringey, the bard is annoying, yennefer is hot i guess but her character doesnt develop further than "jealous witch with sad childhood who murders people" and the timeline mixup is extremely confusing because i havent read the books or played the games so its impossible to follow and compared to other fantasy movies the worldbuilding is really bad and superficial. it never feels like the world is bigger than whatever set or piece of CGI we are looking at. they keep talking about a war and not showing it. he also barely does any witching, it would be 20x better if the first season ws just geralt hunting some monsters with way lower stakes so we can explore the world and his character and then slowly introduce the other characters. but no they just jumbled a bunch of stuff together from different parts of the source material. its honestly one of the worst tv shows i have ever watched a whole season of. wouldve turned it off after the first or second episode if i had been watching it alone.

They have completely disintegrated into something that has no discernable plot, character motivations or development, no moral or philosophical questions, its just brightly colored objects flashing across the screen. A 3 year old can understand a Marvel movie as well as an adult. Been watching some French movies on Netflix, Lost Bullet, Rogue City, can wholeheartedly recommend those over whatever Disney craps out this year.

They spent 200 on making the movie and Disney usually spends 100-200 million on marketing per movie. At best, before taxes, this movie barely broke even. That's without considering taxes. After tax it's surely a loss. They need to pay the Chinese govt to be allowed to show the movie, they have to pay taxes in Europe on their profit here, basically anywhere except the US, even if the movie doesn't make money, they pay taxes because their subsidiaries abroad did make money. And those subsidiaries also have employees and distribution costs. And then there's the copyright lawyers. There is no way this movie made money.

  506. Stopped watching this show after the first 3 episodes, the pilot was alright but they clearly got a worse director for the rest of the first season. The cinematography is bad, dialogue is simplistic, the plot is predictable and the episode structure extremely formulaic. When the third episode of your first season is 100% filler, your show is bad and your ideas are bad and you should feel bad. I dont see any reason to expect season 2 to be any better. I cant imagine why the Drinker would like this show except that it has a Star Wars logo in it. Disney killed Star Wars. Its over. Let it go.

  510. They have an arc, there is source material, but they dont stick to it, because dumbing it down and pandering to the lowest common denominator of the audience means higher profits. These production companies will continue butchering fresh IPs until they cant find more and then they reboot an old one and butcher it again. Same thing happened with GoT, just like it happens to every fantasy movie that isn't directed by Peter Jackson. They always turn out trash. And for the past 10 years or so, it happens with comic book movies too. The Marvel movies are some of the blandest "entertainment" i have ever witnessed. the plots are nonsensical and always the same "take the macguffin from the bad guy of the episode" structure, there is no conflict except some short term melodrama between the heroes to give them an excuse to spout a more funny Joss Whedon quip lines that haven't been any good since Firefly got cancelled, there is nothing daring or new about it, its just brightly colored objects moving across the screen for 90 minutes. And the DC movies are just as bad in exactly the same way, only they have less brightly colored objects on the screen so their movies dont sell as well. What needs to happen is for these companies to stop buying exclusive rights to good source material and then butchering it for easy profits.

You cant just put 2 hours of bad "world building" in your first movie and then expect the IP to succeed. Thats why most succesful fantasy and sci fi books or movies start with a self-contained story that is character focused and then branch out from there.   606. 1. would have been interesting if they showed how much the nazi trope aligns with current US government policy (and policies of your private companies) both abroad and domestically instead of just going "look here: nazis bad". they could do it in 1 minute by just having stormfront list some stuff she agrees with, that you are already currently doing, that the real nazis would also have approved of. 2. yes lots of plot holes and lots of filler, this whole season could have been 3-4 episodes if they cut out all the shots of people sitting around silently, saying useless things, reacting to stuff, and walking. 3. yes but this is due to every episode being 60% filler so you get enough time to think about what they will do next.

  609. gotta disagree there, terminator already started going downhill with terminator 2. the first movie was pretty good. T2 was a by the books james cameron / michael bay explosion snoozefest and the kid was annoying. just like Alien was a good sci fi movie and Alien 2 was a generic action movie. Its just kinda how sequels work. oh and another thing that stands out is the quality of the acting. T1 great acting. Linda Hamilton and the guy playing Kyle Reese were great. Arnold didnt get more lines than he could handle. T2 already had the annoying kid with questionable acting skills and gave Arnold too much screentime. but Genisys just has terrible actors all over. Its not just that they dont fit in the movie, its that theyre not that great at their job in general. Jai Courtney is supposed to be in B action movies, not in AAA productions. Emilia Clarke should be unemployed at this point. Eveything she is in bombs.
