Other smaller economies depend on US dollars to trade their surpluses. Even the Chinese , ironically co- sponsors of BRICS, are ostensibly combating the flight of US dollar reserves away from China. That is what the crackdown on Hong aKong was all about. Hong Kong shifted from an administrative region that brought in dollars to one which was syphoning away US dollars. There might be less transactions arbitraged on US Dollars to settle oil contracts , this is become evident. But oil deals are only a fraction of the workd trade. Otherwise , the US Government using its institutions to block the flow of dollars through sanctions and embargoes , will force other countries to seek safer forms of settlement. And a lesser disposition from other central banks to buy US debt along with currency swaps. And BRICs might not be the answer to the US dollar . All it takes is one Treasury / Central Bank manipulating its currency value to undermine the system’s credibility.
