Brazilian Favelas earned the ignominious honours to be synonymous to Slums. What is done is done. The term Favela becomes an adopted universal reference as what a slum is like. The irony of all, you can’t even shout favelas in Brazil anymore. It is politically incorrect. You got to call them “ Comunidades “ as per communities. Go figure it

@fourthdeconstruction You probably haven’t set in Brazil, or at least in a long while. Some Brazilian favelas have power lines , running water , sewage. They might be informal settlements , devoid of planing or elaborate architecture. But they are not as downtrodden as your wild imagination might conceive.

@its-all-good Mexicans are superstitious. Brazilians , to a certain degree. Yet Nowhere any close to what Mexicans are. No such a thing as to what side of the sidewalk they walk. Go walk Avenida Paulisfa and see if they care as to whether they are on curbside or building side. They might be pulling your leg. Besides , you can take what Brazilians say with a grain of salt. This goes back to the late Charles de Gaule , who once said …Brazilians can’t be taken seriously.

In Brazil , the police is to be perceived as violent in densely populated urban metropolitan areas. And so the nunbers validate. Now , as far as shaking down street civilians , on trumped up charges , at least for the past ten years , I haven’t seen or heard none of it. Maybe they let the petty criminals do it and then tax them. That situation I got once from a career burglar. An isolated account. But uniformed men doing shake downs under false pretenses …..Never. It used fo be , then I saw as a kid, that cops shook down money on violations you would rather have the punishment go away. Traffic cop stops were all that much frequent. But nowadays with candid camera and traffic surveillance cameras , that racket has been taken away from the rank and file.
