Fewer people at the assembly line, and more people into coding, materials science. If you want to grow Union ranks , assembly lines ain’t it anymore. Get a clue Mr Union Boss. Blocking coding to be done overseas is the biggest challenge in preserving well paying jobs Stateside. As the car makers shift into EVs , retooling their plants will be in tall order, which will lead to fewer hands slapping assemblies on the factory floor. Look at Tesla. They already figured out their factory floor tooling , which employs a few to program the machinery and robots. Even the chassis frame is a single cast body part. Not a junction of robot welded body parts. Which further translates into fewer people at the toolroom making dies and stamps . Right there goes a huge write down on sunk costs on acquired equipment, hence eliminating a lot of redundant labor. Meanwhile they are continuously throwing money on software development , bug fixes. That is still a labor intense part of building their models lineup. If you care about your card carrying members standard of living , get funding from automakers to put them for training on how to code.

@@JamesDeWalt909 maybe. But these Chinese makers are moving into Europe and Latin America , overtaking waning US automakers . Ford is gone, and ironically so, BYD overtook Ford’s last closing plant in Brazil . Lock, stock , and barrel. And they are targeting Ford Dealerships for flag conversions. And then there is Chery, Great Wall. No global presence , no economies of scale. No funding for new product lines.
