  1. Satellite links have built in latency. Transcontinental fiber loops have far less latencies. To each its own. Financial data and voice are sensitive to latency , hence fiber. Video broadcast is more tolerable to latency. Which can be compensated in part with CDNs, outside the live stuff that needs to be aired. All one needs to see is watch a field reporter in some remote war zone. Or even Stateside. They will pickup on a few extra microseconds to get back on location. Those extra microseconds might cost a few billions of lost dollars on delayed stuff. How slower it is ? You are celebrating your team scored goal in a match in England while the players have already moved past the celebrations.

  2. Peter , the fiber loops from North America to Brazil have end points in Miami ( NAP of Americas ) and travel seaside up until it reaches the PoPs in Brazil ( Fortaleza CE I believe. Maybe Natal, RN ). And then they descend towards Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian loops from Brazil reach Europe and Africa , on separate route concessions / consortiums. The North South loop is a multi homed subsea link. Several carriers are in it. My educated guess , Telefonica from Spain , Century Link( former Global Crossing / Level 3 ), Claro / Telmex /Embratel , and other participants. They do not cross Central America.

Based upon available fiber route maps and my own past experience in the trade. . And the posters in this Chanel often pick up on Mr Zeihan miscues, just as I have done. Personally , his body of work aside , I am not keen on the word of consultants of any shape or form.
