Way Before this BRICS became the hype of the moment , we used to trade outside the dollar on a barter system, whenever the chance presented itself. This materialized with Iraq in the early eighties. We took their crude , and then we shipped VW Passats , frozen poultry , and sent engineering firms to build infrastructurethrrd. M Russia : Bankrupt and irrelevant India : Our competition. We haven’t trade any significant amounts with them, and likely won’t. China : Hoping to hijack the dollar to have the world to bankroll their unfinished projects. Since the Renmibi or yuan is worthless outside China , this group formation is probably their best hope to get their agenda going. South Africa: The Chinese are courting them since Australia soured on them and joined the US. Yet, the US represents a sizeable market for South Africans ( De Boers, Wineries, Tourism ).

@TheDuravida wars cost largest sums of money. They don’t have a strong tax base. Outside 3-4 cities , there is not much in terms of diversified economies. Their defense contractors can’t come up with anything that works in the battlefield. Whatever is shipped out , is expensive and less effective. They had German businesspeople do actually make their agribusiness to go anywhere. In fact, they offered land go Afrikaans so they could get people to produce anything. Anywhere you see in their vast wastelands , infrastructure is either non existent , or falling apart. Debt to GDP means squat, if you don’t have an economy that generates strong currency.

@TheDuravida There are plenty of commodities rich countries that can’t generate wealth. Commodities are subject to wide price variations and often don’t yeld any amount of distributed wealth as countries where manufacturing and intelectual property rights make up for the bulk of generated wealth. Also mining and oil prospecting are directly and adversely affected by capital inflows. The Russian prorated war will suffer from capital inflows, whether through reserves or foreign capital injection. Classic examples … Commodity Rich , Low Wealth Distribution Venezuela ( crude , they can barely refine what they extract ) Any Sub Saharan Country short of South Africa Russia Federation ( scant manufacturing, if you account for foreign subsidiaries that were shutdown ) Commodity Poor , improved wealth distribution Japan Germany Switzerland Portugal Singapore South Korea Israel Yes, the Russians are going broke. Thanks to a completely unnecessary war. Banking on Russian Federation to be an equity partner with other countries within the BRICS block won’t bode well for neither one of the proposed members. It’s the equivalent of Germany having to bailout Greece through the European Union for Greece’s own misdeeds. Not a good outlook.
