"Dark/light" L, aka "hard/soft" or, more scientifically, "non-palatalized/palatalized". Almost any consonant can be of these 2 modifications, not just L. There are even more light Ls in French, than in German. Native English speakers are not aware of these types because they are not used to distinguish meanings. For example, in Russian switching a consonant from dark to light type or vice versa may produce another word with a completely different meaning, and such words are actually written differently, though this difference sometimes cannot be conveyed if transcribed in Latin alphabet.
