@augustbasil4003 The Soviets sent many writers and artists to the gulags, and many books that were critical, or did not fit with soviet ideologies were destroyed in libraries and universities. To deny that is crazy bias. I would love a truly communist world. But not one like that, where you get imprisoned for ideas.

@augustbasil4003 Of course my comment isn't "totally irrelevant." It directly pertains to the destruction of ideas that undercut the ideological supremacy of a said regime, which is the crux of what is wrong about destroying books, art, film and so on. Israel can't stand that the books are evidence that their victims are thinking beings capable of art and philosophy and logic and science, not the "human animals" they keep saying they are in order to justify their own vaunted ideological and moral supremacy. That is exactly what the Nazis, Stalin, Mao, the Spaniards in Sth America, the Catholics and the Protestants did. I'm honest about it, and I don't pick a side and defend it against the evidence. I'm on the side of truth and facts, not of communism, capitalism, religion, or any other "side."

@antonius3745 He did. And he killed or imprisoned authors who wrote things he didn't like. He also had many paintings destroyed and artists killed or imprisoned in gulags. The first thing he did was murder or imprison the intelligentsia, starting with university lecturers and writers. As did Mao Tse Tung. I love the idea of communism, I wish it had worked, but greedy, corrupt, power-mad men what could have been a true utopia.

@augustbasil4003 Countless books and artworks were destroyed by Stalin's regime and the soviets, by one means or another. That's a fact. I wish communism had worked, but like capitalism, it was corrupted by power-seeking and greedy individuals. I wish a way to make it work existed, but there are always corrupt and greedy individuals who try to take everything for themselves. The way Norway is governed seems to be working pretty well at the moment, though.

@augustbasil4003 Books routinely "disappeared" from universities and libraries, and people were sent to the gulags for teaching what was in them. What do you suppose was done to the books and artworks to destroy them? Whether they were burned or not - the means of disposal - is absolutely irrelevant. People died in those gulags in enormous numbers. That's a fact. I would love for Stalin to not have stuffed up a beautiful opportunity for a utopian society; but he did. There's no getting around the fact that there are bad people who try to dominate and corrupt every political system. Just take a look at Trump, and Biden for that matter, bypassing and ignoring laws to enact whatever they want. Art under Stalin was used as propaganda, that is it. As an artist, I find that repugnant, even though I like the style of some of the poster art from that period. As for artworks being destroyed, I suggest you look up the exhibition dissident artists held in a field in the USSR in 1974; the crowd was broken up, and the artworks were destroyed by water cannons and bulldozers. The exhibition came to be known as "The Bulldozer Exhibition."

@augustbasil4003 Take a look at the "Bulldozer Exhibition" in the USSR in 1974, in which dissident artists tried to express their themselves by exhibiting in an open field. The crowd was broken up, and the artworks destroyed be water cannons and bulldozers. That was a very recent one. Stalin destroyed millions of people, and under his tyranny art devolved into propaganda, with himself as the "beloved Father" of the people, or to promote the idea of people as an army of happy workers. That is all that was allowed to be expressed. That is not art. That is propaganda.

@augustbasil4003 I didn't say he burned "books, artwork and people." I said he had books burned. But whether they were burned or destroyed - along with the people who wrote, taught from them, or owned them - or destroyed in another way is completely and utterly irrelevant. It was the control and destruction of dissident IDEAS that mattered.
