@gdiwolverinemale3rd Because land is expensive, and mostly inherited. That's why so many farmers don't bother to educate themselves to a high enough level to understand what the scientists are trying to tell them.

Yes, they're worried they'll actually be financially punished for clearing right up to the edge of rivers and streams, or up hillsides, or for clearing every single tree on grazing land, or for never leaving land fallow with nitrogen fixing plants on it to help the soil. They want to squeeze every cent from the desperate soil.
