  93. @A Hole Most drugs do not come across the border that would be protected by a wall. They are smuggled via monitored entry points and via the water. Again the wall is largely symbolic. The ONLY answer to the drug problem is to legalize it. These drugs are problematic only because they are illegal and have the exact same problem alcohol did when we handed control of it to the gangs during Prohibition. Drug use is higher today than a decade ago and by any standard the war on drugs is an overt failure that is costing us billions while failing worse each year. We should be legalizing taxing and regulating Cannabis. Keeping illegal will continue drive criminal empires just like when drinking alcohol did when it was briefly criminalized. If you are concerned about the violence associated with an underground drug market then legalize it and move the fights into court room and not on the streets. The existing policy empowers violent criminals and for profit prisons and no one else. Ending the drug war is what we should be doing. We are putting our finger in the dyke and criminalizing the consumption of substances. The drugs like heroin, cocaine and the others are problematic because they are addictive but their worst effects are mitigated not by prisons but by treatment. When Portugal decriminalized (not legalized) these drugs their use went down. They were able to focus funds on treatment and decreased to worst effects of the drugs that still effect us in our system which does nothing to stop them. What is "retarded" is advocating for the failed status quo polices based on a gut feeling, you obviously have not put much thought or research into this subject.

  95. @A Hole My answer is not that. For the areas more remote where we do not have a wall we should increase our drone surveillance of the region. We should make it so no one can walk through that area without us seeing them. We need to create fast action units that can be rapidly deployed to breaches. We can use existing hardware and facilities to support this by simply allocating or transferring them them to this task. This solution has several advantages. It does not require the government to invoke eminent domain and seize the land of citizens to build the wall and respects property rights. It is far cheaper and arguably more effective because it puts human eyes on the issue and does not rely on mindless concrete. And it is modern solution that will be harder to circumvent than a wall making it the better choice. That being said you have not shown our existing situation without a wall in some places problematic enough to call it an emergency. I think locking down those locations with drones makes sense but more because we can do it then there is real and driving reason reason to do it. On the issue of drugs we need to overhaul our policy if we are actually concerned about the issues we face. No wall, no drone surveillance team, no border crossing will be able to address the problem of drugs getting passed what are static defenses that can be circumvented. This will always be true as long as there is a dollar to be made. I agree with Trump when he is right, I unlike you disagree with him when he is wrong and just selling a line that a specific group likes even if it does nothing.
