Underground with domes and bubbles on the surface. Is easier to build large scale underground as we have limited materials to do otherwise.

@mikeb.7068 Yep, like the guys exploring the arctic in wooden sailing ships without appropriate clothing. Uncomfortable, but worthwhile in the end.

Agree, there are easier less problematic places to set up shop off earth. Prepared asteroids or manufactured rotating habitats are better options than trying to colonize mars which has all the same challenges as the other options with the issue of getting material onto and off the planet added. Shielding living quarters with quantiles of stone or ice will be a part of the design, an ice shield over your habitat has the extra advantage of providing ready supply water and air to draw from,

Of course they can, it is just expensive as the material to do so has to be transported there.

@donaldduck830 I was talking about building underground in a terrestrial setting like mars or the moon. They will build out underground facilities in those places first. Doing so has many advantages over being on the surface exclusively, not the least of which is a reduced material needs for construction. Ultimately building rotating habitats in space may be easier than on a satellite using the very techniques you mention. Not having to beat gravity in construction is a huge saving in energy.

@mikeb.7068 Neither was sailing, did not stop us.

Sure, no one is pretending they will. It is just putting our eggs in second basket.

By the time they do it there will already be facilities in place carved by those who get there first and automated builders.

We know humans do just fine being trapped in a small area, wanderlust as a common concept is pretty new as most people in the past never left the small region they lived, including those originally on Hawaii.

@benjamindover5676 Expectations are clearly malleable then, they are based on individual circumstance and are open to change. Different people value different things, many are never going to take an international flight even as they can. If there is something innate about humanities desire to travel, it is found in the few brave or desperate souls that have ventured into the unknown in the past. Always on a search to find new places to dominate to carve out an existence, despite any challenges.
1
@benjamindover5676 That will always be true, it was true even when we were village bound. It means we will always have someone to explore further with little to lose at home.

@Audioobscure why?

Much of green, sun and sky can be simulated. That is an issue will will have to solve at one time or another. I get not being excited at going, it will take someone that actually wants the adventure of this challenge. The kind of person who was willing to live on small wind powered ship with terrible food and no land at your feet while they sallied into the unknown. There will have no problem finding people to go when we are ready
1
@jamesmcmanus We can do both things here on earth and explore the rest of our solar system too. The ideas are not mutually exclusive.
1
Meteors striking the dome are the least of the concerns, even then it would only drain the dome and the sub areas and tunnels would automatically seal at a breach, not all would be lost if the design was even half decent.
