  3. The US doesn't need to adopt an island welfare state needing lots of help with little to offer or contribute. Things will stay the way they are for decades to come.

  4. Except for a handful of islands (by way of tourism) throughout the world that draw visitors, its a tough argument that any island has any benefit to be sponsored by a larger country. Even most islands strategic military positions has greatly diminished with advancing technology. Lots of islands wish they had a sugar daddy when all they have is their beauty. Just being in the natural path of major hurricanes is costly bad luck.
