The "Paul Is Dead" hype that went around from 1966 right up to the eventual Beatles split, was nothing more than a publicity stunt. The saddest thing is that so many people around the world were "sucked in" by it. Whoever came up with the idea deserves nothing more than contempt. Likely it would've been John Lennon who cooked up this stupid stunt whilst under the influence of whatever drug he was taking at the time.

The Paul Is Dead thing was never much more than a publicity stunt that was carried much too far and the "joke"(in very poor taste) ceased to be funny almost instantly.

Well, if no stunt, obviously the crash wasn't severe and Paul clearly survived but the idiots who assumed the worst, several LP covers and "ephemera" related to The Beatles played on the myth, like Paul being barefoot on the Abbey Road cover, and the rego plate on the VW reading 29 IF, being two examples.

@handle-schmandle Because it had been dragged out for far too long. It might've been funny for a week, but after 50-odd years it got boring.

@handle-schmandle It was a publicity stunt started by person or persons unkown(but I doubt The Beatles themselves were all that involved). It should've fizzled out after a week or a month, but instead has persisted for an obscene amount of time and I'm sure Paul McCartney himself is heartily sick of hearing about it.

@handle-schmandle It is precisely because it has dragged out for such an obscene length of time that I'm angry about it. It was a publicity stunt that, frankly, should never have happened, but it did, and it should've ended a week or so later and been forgotten about. But here we are in 2020 and people are STILL stupidly claiming that Paul is dead and the fellow we see now is an imposter! GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK!

@yvettebeck6367 WAKE UP TO YOURSELF FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! PAUL McCARTNEY IS NOT DEAD, DID NOT DIE IN 1966 OR ANY OTHER YEAR! The whole Paul Is Dead bit was a publicity stunt that was dragged out for an obscenely long time!

@yvettebeck6367 You patronising TWAT! PAUL LIVES!

Nevertheless, there were a number of videos uploaded to YouTube that tried to perpetuate the myth. You've likely seen a few, I expect.

I'd like to know who came up with this publicity stunt. It sounds like something John Lennon might've thought up, but carrying it on from 1966 right up to the eventual break-up of The Beatles, that was just plain SICK!

The sanctimonious Southern states of America were looking for any reason to hate The Beatles and likely deliberately misinterpreted Lennon's "more popular than Jesus" statement.
