  1. Tragic as it was, 15th December, 2012 was the day of the massacre, so 15th December, 2017 is the 5-year anniversary. But what has America learned from the massacre 5 years on? NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL! Australia had the Port Arthur mass shooting in 1996 and tightened our gun laws as a direct consequence. Since then we've had no more similar fatalities... WE LEARNED FROM HISTORY!!!!! AMERICA IS INCAPABLE OF LEARNING FROM HISTORY!

  2. They were severe but not as severe as Port Arthur. But the fact that we've had so few instances of such violent outrages, and happening only sporadically, as against Sandy Hook-like incidences being an almost-daily occurrence in America, you Americans are NOT in a position to judge us Australians.

  4. That "one rare shooting" was severe enough to enact those gun laws, and then some years before that, in Melbourne a crazed gunman caused what is today referred to as the "Hoddle Street Massacre. Thing is, we DID learn from these tragedies. America, failing tragically, as it has, to learn from Sandy Hook, will continue to see such tragedies played out again, and again, and again. Until the influence of that obscenity known as the National Rifle Association is neutralised, such tragedies as Sandy Hook will go on happening.

If a country's government can enact gun laws sensibly and sanely as Australia has done, and France as well. then although a random case of gun violence will emerge from time to time. the occasion WILL be rare. No country is totally immune to the phenomenon but it can be controlled.

  6. The ban was in no way pointless. Had it not been for that ban, things here in Australia may well have become as bad as America. If we never had ads bad a problem here, that was more due to good luck(sort of) tan good management. The Port Arthur Massacre was a wake-up call, if anything.

  7. +Adrian, we may have had(roughly) the same guns or(per-capita) the same amount of guns, but we weren't a gun-crazy culture, and, bar a few nut-jobs out there, still aren't gun-crazy. Comparing us to America is like comparing chalk to cheese or oranges to apples. And I have the feeling this conversation is going around in circles(I'm starting to get dizzy LOL).

We have Sydney(capital of New South Wales), Melbourne(capital of Victoria), Brisbane(capital of Queensland), Adelaide(capital of South Australia), Perth(capital of Western Australia) and Hobart(capital of Tasmania). Each of these are sizeable cities and where you have a big city, you'll have a degree of criminal activity. Then we have several regional cities(too many to list here), each with their own level of criminal activity, so we're not immune to criminal behaviour. Whether our crime rate in Australia compares to yours in America is neither here nor there, it's not relevant. Suffice to say larger cities will always face problems with criminal behaviour of one kind or another. It's just that in America those problems are exacerbated by an insane gun culture promoted by an obscenity called the National Rifle Association.

If your homicide rate in the USA has roughly halved in the 5 years since Sandy Hook, that would be more due to good luck than good management. You still have that obscenity, the National Rifle Association calling for more guns on the streets every time an atrocity like Sandy Hook occurs, which runs against common sense. If something causes death or severe accident, you remove it, you do NOT add to it.
