In Australia, voting is COMPULSORY, as it SHOULD BE! You register to vote at the age of 18. If you're about to turn 18 prior to a Local Council, State or Federal Government Election, you are required by Australian law to register with the Australian Electoral Commission to be put on the roll for your electorate(or Ward, in the case of local council elections) and you are then permanently registered to vote and, unlike the utterly corrupt American system, an Australian voter CANNOT BE DISENFRANCHISED unless he/she commits a crime which requires a prison sentence. And no, Prisoners should not have the right to vote. You forfeit your rights as a citizen when you commit a crime which requires a prison sentence, if that sentence is beyond 3 months. A minor crime which results in a sentence of three months or less should not revoke that right, but would suspend said right for the duration of the sentence, but if the sentence goes beyond 3 months, then the voting right is PERMANENTLY forfeited.
