  1. Adam Goodes was RIGHT to call the girl out on the taunt. The girl DESERVED the embarrassment and I hope her mother also caught some of the flak from the incident as well. That the girl apologised is more likely because she was told to do so. I doubt she'd have done so willingly.

  2. No, you're not putting this back on Adam Goodes. He did the right thing here. The girl was in her teens, old enough to know better. Adam Goodes has nothing to apologise for. The girl apologised only after she was made to do so, which makes her apology a hollow gesture at best.

  3. The kid was 13, old enough to know better! Yes Adam Goodes called her out on it but he's not the one who dragged it out. That was the media's doing. They latched on to the story and milked it for every drop of sensationalist headlines they could get out of it, especially the Murdoch GUTTER-PRESS! Goodes himself wanted it all done and dusted, finished.

If Adam Goodes HAD NOT reacted as he did, it would give that girl, and every other racist, licence to continue to insult, deride and degrade others, based on their ethnicity. Repugnant and reprehensible behaviour, as exhibited by the girl, who was of an age to know better, should NOT be allowed to go unpunished.

  12. Shaynel, I believe she was treated MORE than fairly. She made a rude, racist comment that was completely uncalled for and she was of an age where she would've known that to be a wrongful thing to do. The apology to Adam Goodes, when it finally did come, was insincere as it was forced, she was told to do it rather than do it voluntarily. She is now 18 but I sorely doubt she's learned anything from that episode of 5 years earlier.

Indeed, the first words uttered, "I'm not a racist, but....." are the very first words uttered by racists. The girl was in the wrong and was caught out and called out on it. And for the record, I'm of mixed Scottish and English heritage, so I would not know what it's like to suffer racial taunts, I freely admit that. But for someone like Adam Goodes, that sort of thing is, as I've noted, a daily occurrence and it would wear him down over time, as it would you. So yes, Adam WAS INDEED right to call that girl out on her racial taunt.

  16. She is a high-school-aged girl, OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER. She'd be 18 years old by now as this event took place back in 2013, it's now 2018, nearing the end of her school years. She should NOT have got off lightly simply because of her age.

  18. There's been NO overkill. Adam Goodes was perfectly right to call out anti-social(racist) behaviour from a teenaged girl who had no legitimate excuse for her behaviour. Shaynel, you claim to be a member of an ethnic minority, then you do your people no service by trying to excuse the inexcusable. I wanted to buy out of this argument but I keep getting dragged back in by uninformed comments like this.

  19. Veganath, the one thing you have NOT touched on is DISCIPLINE! The child was NOT DISCIPLINED by her mother and thought it okay to cast racist insults at Adam Goodes. Adam Goodes reacted the ONLY way he could in the circumstance. And You have, I strongly suspect, deliberately IGNORED that element in this atgument.

  20. Learning Now: You are quite right. I is NOT Adam Goode's job to teach good manners to children, that is the role of the parent(s). But it IS Adam Goode's right to be able to follow his career WITHOUT being vilified, insulted or derided for his ethnic background.

  22. The whole point of this has been that a beloved sports identity was derided and insulted because of his ethnic background. Veganath, if you were in the same position as was Adam Goodes, you would've been well within your rights to call that girl out. The girl needed to learn the lesson that what she did was WRONG. If action is NOT taken, then licence is granted to continue to be abusive toward minority ethnic groups for no other reason than their ethnicity.   23. Veganath, you'd rather the girl be allowed to insult anyone and everyone based on their ethnicity? Her behaviour was anti-social at its least. At its most it is ugly, racially bigoted and intolerant, and should not be accepted in the 21st century. Compassion and love are one thing, but when you're in the wrong you should apologise voluntarily, This girl did not apologise until she was forced to do so, which rendered her apology hollow and insincere.

Loosely interpreted means if you don't bat an eyelid at what you see played out before you, then you condone it, regardless of how repugnant it will appear to others. However, if you stop and challenge what you're seeing, then you are, with the rest of society, condemning the practice. Such is the case with the 13-year-old girl(now 18 years old) who was rightly called out on a racist attitude she got from her mother(in all likelihood, as her father may have left the family home) and the racist slur she cast on Adam Goodes.

  28. Vitali Goji: Wake up to yourself! Racism is at the heart of this issue, the relative ages of the offendor and the offended have only a tiny part to play here. Perhaps you've never experienced racism yourself, and admittedly nor have I but then I'm not Aboriginal but minority ethnic people, like Aboriginals, Afro-Americans, Asians living in western countries and such-like have to put up with racist abuse on an almost, if not daily basis and it will get to them and wear them down because they shouldn't have to put up with such rot. So if someone actually calls it out and shames the person who committed the offence, the person who called it out should be lauded and praised, not ridiculed by ignorant fools like you. And yes, I DO OBJECT to you calling Adam Goodes a "pussy", I object on his behalf.

  31. Dennis, you misunderstood my comment. I said basically that fathers aren't always the racist influence for a child. sometimes a child may be influenced by her/his mother. The girl's father may have left the family home for a variety of reasons but even if he was still at home, he may not have been the one to teach the girl, directly or indirectly, her racist attitudes. I hope that clarifies my earlier comment.

I could only really guess the girl got her attitude from her mother, but if that isn't so, then perhaps from friends at school if her father was "out of the picture". But her mother should have pulled her up on this(assuming her mother was with her at that game).

The media, particularly commercial broadcast and print, had taken the story and beat it up way out of proportion to what it should've been. The WORST offenders being outlets belonging to the "King Of Sleaze", Rupert Murdoch. Social media, such as Facebook and Twitter appear to me to be full of trolls who get their jollies by making everyone else miserable. And you're right about 2018 and how it should not be this way this far into the 21st century. A "Star trek" type world without racism, prejudice or war? Not a "silly" notion, just regrettably utopian and unattainable as things are today.

We're ALL human, it's just that there are different species, different varieties, you might say. What it basically comes back to is a 13-year-old girl who was unnecessarily rude and obnoxious to a sportsman who didn't deserve to be abused the way he was, and called the abuse out, as was his right and it was the right thing to do.
