  4.  @travis1240  That's due to America's woeful standard of education. The difference in spelling is due to the difference in meaning. Promisory note in lieu of cash = Cheque! Examine something/tick something off from a list, move to(nearly) finish a game of chess = Check! And by the way, the word is spelt cheque in *properly-educated countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the countries that make up the United Kingdom.
