If you coupled the diameter of the Laser Disc(12 inches) with the method of "writing" content to the disc as used in the DVD system, think of the capacity a 12-inch disc could have, as well as media packaging possibilities. A 1- or 2-disc set could carry the entire series of M*A*S*H from 1972's Pilot Episode right through to the movie-length "Goodbye, Farewell & Amen" episode of 1982. Or a single disc could carry all the British "Carry-On" movies, or even all 8 Harry Potter movies from Philosopher's Stone, right through to Deathly Hallows Part s 1 & 2. Each movie would have its own set of sub-chapters as the movie itself would be one "chapter" of the disc.

To talk about a transparent disc where a light beam would be shot through the surface of said disc to a sensor on the opposite side, modulated by varying degrees of such transparency, would suggest that such a disc could only be single-sided. However, the Laser-Disc format used a dual-sided disc of the same diameter as a long-playing record album(12 inches) where a feature movie would be spread over both sides of the disc.

6:30 A double-sided transparent optical disc would NOT be possible as the beam would penetrate the disc, coming out the other side so that the contents of each side would "confuse" the playback system as they would almost be read together. Typical of Philips technocrats to come up with such a stupid idea.
