Excellent analysis, though obviously I can't judge its veracity. Double-cropping like you describe is disastrous. You should produce intensive crops like potatoes only once every few years if you want the land to remain fertile. There are a lot of things the North Koreans could learn from other nations, if they weren't ruled by fear.

Thank God for anti-monopoly laws and governments that actively break up monopolies. We should have more of those.

The UNIX wars show like little else how bean counters destroyed a business by misreading the room, overpricing a product because they thought they could, and creating a competitor who wiped them out. All to the great detriment of the consumer.

@RaveN_EDM The NK regime has been responsible for literally millions of deaths. Contrast this with the prosperity of the South, and we know we made the right decision when we entered the Korean War, and that the Chinese regime has a LOT to answer for in keeping this regime in power.

@KanishQQuotes Sure. Wasn't talking about culture but about technology and economics. However, I doubt there is anything left of Korean culture in N.K.: generations of oppression by absolute tirants who want to control your every thought and be worshiped as god tends to destroy a culture.

Thanks for documenting this story! I love ST, their MCU's are my favorite ARM processors. Great support from the demo software suite to the Nucleo devboards.

@Retrofire-47 Eh, no. There is a considerable rejection rate: IC's that simply do not function as a result of minute errors or contaminations. That is why testing is so important. If all were perfect, no testing would be necessary. These machines are not perfect, they are good enough to make money with them.

@xxportalxx. Thanks for the war stories! I have never worked in a fab, I have been involved in making some of the machines (laser dicing & lithography -- ALSI & ASML). Hard to avoid those companies as a Dutch EE-trained software developer.

There was a time when in my life when having my own Sun workstation was the definition of "having arrived". I loved that technology.

This is an excellent treatise on why a Command Economy is inferior to a free, non-corrupt market. It is also a great background to the demise of the USSR. I find it extremely disturbing that some people still think the USSR was something to aspire to.

This computer is the first one I was free to play with, and typed my first efforts at programming into. I will always have a soft spot for it.

These machines will never be sold outside China, as they are built around IP stolen from e.g. ASML.

Differential Equations are the best thing since sliced bread -- although they are in fact quite a bit older. Most modern technology is built on them. It is not normal to fear them.

Great video. The ludicrous Unix Wars have wasted a lot time and money, but Unix remains the best OS there is and will become the OS for all general purpose computing.

I am always disgusted by corrupt regimes blowing their horn based on historic achievements. As investment companies are required to mention in our nation, "Historic results are no guarantee for the future".

@duckpotat9818 Perhaps you should read more carefully, you may find that all the nuance you think necessary to add is already there.

Another problem in the counterfeit scourge is the lack of prosecution in certain countries.

@funnyfarm5555 It depends on the crop you double-up. Soy is a legume, and those tend to enrich the soil (by binding nitrogen). Potatoes will deplete the soil very quickly if you repeat them to quickly. Farmers where I live (Netherlands) only do potatoes once every 3 years, I have heard.

@edward9643 If they had an attitude in which they could learn, they wouldn't be in the position they are in...

"Not about the lowest price of beer" This is true. Otherwise everybody would by all their beer at the supermarket and consume it at home.

You can make a LOT of money by being a nasty company. For a brief time.

You are right there should be more attention on the company ASML. It has been the world's most advanced technical company for about three decades now, during which time it increasing its productivity (in # transistors created by its machines) by about 8 orders of magnitude. That is an unbelievable achievement, unparalleled by any human organisation in history.

"Oracle ran on all platforms, but best of all the slide" That made me laugh. I have helped several companies port from Oracle to MySQL as a solution to their performance issues. Though nowadays I'd probably use PostgreSQL.

People sometimes wonder why I am negative about both Microsoft and Intel. I lived through the 90ies as an adult working in the tech industry. That is why. Those companies were the worst of the worst, and I still do not trust them one bit.

Very well explained!
