Thanks for discussing how much the fire would have plunged. I had always had a gut feeling that the plunging fire theory did not hold water. These are long guns, not howitzers, so the arriving angle would not be very much higher than the angle at which a round was fired. It would also have meant that the designers of the armour belt were incompetent idiots, which is not likely. Being a wet ship that is heavier than originally designed would have exacerbated the depth of the trough, making the final scenario more likely: the designers would have assumed the trough would have been smaller.
