  1. Elpinstone suffered from many of the things that modern British leaders suffer from. The way they are bred and taught seems to give them a false sense of entitlement, that they can't imagine ever being wrong or in danger of making mistakes. And are completely blind to the consequences of any mistakes they make. Elphinstone got what he deserved. But it is infinitely sad so many suffered as a result of his incompetence...

  2. Perhaps they test military commanders all the way up the top. Such a shame the Brits do not do the same with their political leaders.
