The Rule of Law is the foundation of any good government, democratic or not. The principle of Rule of Law MUCH is older than the Constitution. Rule of Law means that EVERYBODY is subject to the Law, including the acting Sovereign, and that the Law is applied equally to all. Rule of Law is why Lady Justice carries a blindfold. Trump is demanding that for each case, Lady Justice peeps from under her blindfold to check whether it is a former president standing before her. That violates all principles of good government established since the 12th century. Rule of Law is also why this Republican doctrine of "a sitting president can not be indicted" is hot garbage. It is a violation of the Rule of Law.

"Congress doesn't try cases -- except impeachment" The same terminology may be used, and there are some similarities to a regular trial -- like the defendant is judged by a jury consisting of all Congressmen -- but there are fundamental differences. Courts of Law can PUNISH, the impeachment court can not. It can only declare somebody unworthy of fulfilling high office, which is not a punishment but a natural consequence of bad behaviour. The difference also exists for regular people. If a worker defrauds his boss, he is dismissed at once. That is not a punishment but the consequence of betraying the trust the boss has vested in him. The worker is then punished by the Court of Law. This is exactly how the Constitution describes impeachment. The president has betrayed the public trust, so the representatives of the public dismiss him. However, if a worker is never found out by his boss, or for some reason his behaviour is kept under wraps, he can still be prosecuted. A case in point is Weisselberg who was prosecuted for fraud before being fired by his boss. The USA should remember that the President has a boss. It is We the People, represented by Congress.
