  1. In a court, the Judge is not just a spectator. He (she) is also the chairperson presiding over the proceedings. When he tells you to stop speaking because your speech is irrelevant to what is being discussed, you stop speaking. When he tells you to sit down, you sit down. If you don't, you are liable to be held in Contempt of Court and fined or even imprisoned.

  2. While true that the cross-examination is the chance for the defense to make their point, it is not an opportunity for rambling rants irrelevant to the case. In order not to waste time, the Judge will still cut it short unless the lawyer can explain relevance. Just like any sensible chair will do in any meeting. The USA Senate is the only place I know of where this isn't the case, leading to e.g. filibusters. Which is an insult to democracy, just like letting a witness ramble on indefinitely or read from a book would be an insult to the court system.
